Williamstown is through to a preliminary final and the Casey Scorpions were eliminated from the VFL Legendairy Finals Series after Sunday’s thrilling action.
The Seagulls joined the Box Hill Hawks in Week 3 of the finals after holding off a spirited Sandringham surge in the final quarter at a windy Trevor Barker Beach Oval to prevail by seven points. The Zebras must now face Collingwood in a do-or-die semi final next week.
Meanwhile, a first-term burst set Essendon on the path to victory against Casey at North Port Oval. While the Scorpions evened things up as the match progressed, it wasn’t enough to stop the Bombers progressing to a semi final date with Footscray next week.
2nd Qualifying Final
WILLIAMSTOWN 13.6 (84) d SANDRINGHAM 11.11 (77)
The bayside conditions at Trevor Barker Beach Oval produced a see-sawing affair that resulted in the Seagulls advancing to a preliminary final and the Zebras facing a date with Collingwood next week. Just three out of 24 goals were scored against the howling wind, with Sandringham kept scoreless in the first quarter and Williamstown unable to score in a tense final term. The Zebs were 48 points down at the last change and roared home, but fell agonisingly short of the Gulls. Nick Meese, Adam Marcon and Willie Wheeler were among the best for the victors, while Matt Kreymborg and Arryn Siposs booted two goals apiece for Sandy.
1st Elimination Final
ESSENDON 10.11 (71) d CASEY SCORPIONS 7.8 (50)
A scintillating first quarter set up a slogging win which put the Bombers into a semi final against Footscray next week. Making use of a strong breeze at North Port Oval, Essendon slammed home six goals to one in a defining opening term. The Scorpions fought back to get the margin under double digits in the third stanza, but after a long goalless period in the final quarter, Bomber Jacob Thompson kicked a memorable sealer from a set shot shortly before the final siren. For the victors, returning captain Marcus Marigliani was important, as were Dan Coghlan, James Polkinghorne and Kyle Hardingham (three goals).

AFL Victoria Development League
Elimination Final
COBURG 17.9 (111) d CASEY SCORPIONS 10.8 (68)
The Lions added to a miserable day for Casey, knocking the Scorpions out of the Development League finals at North Port Oval. Coburg led by a point at quarter time despite kicking against the strong breeze and then used the advantage of the weather to open up a 30-point lead at the main break. The Lions held up well defensively in the third term before running away with the game in the final stanza and booking a preliminary final meeting with Williamstown next week for the right to face the Box Hill Hawks in the decider.
