An unexpected cross-town alliance has emerged for the finals series that has two ambitious AFL Sydney clubs declaring their support for each other in their quest for 2015 premiership glory.
The Camden Cats and Auburn Giants will play the afternoon fixtures at Henson Park on Saturday, with the women’s division two preliminary final between Auburn and Penrith following the Cats’ division two semi-final against Blacktown. Both teams are playing for a place in the Grand Final.
But why the love affair?
The answer is the Giant’s Coach Christian Kunde, who has had a long affiliation with the Cats as a player and general supporter. Christian has been keeping the Giants updated on developments in the south-west, with Camden finishing three games clear as minor premiers.
“We will all be there on Saturday, loud and proud,” Kunde said.
“The ladies are bringing the drums and will be making plenty of noise as the Cats continue their march towards the Grand Final,” he added.
Auburn Giants founder, Amna Karra-Hassan, is overjoyed at the opportunity to be supported by the boys from the Cattery, as her Auburn team looks to continue its charge towards its first premiership.
"To be supported by a club known for its outstanding culture and people is wonderful and humbling. We hope we can uphold the standards set by Camden and will be making loads of noise on Saturday to show how much we appreciate them."
For Cats’ Club President Joshua Leys this is a match made in heaven.
“We got wind that the Giants have been following the progress of our season some weeks back, and the Cattery has mobilised to return the favour for the ladies at Auburn.”
“The Cats are yet to start a women’s side, but we have been watching the rapid growth of the women’s competition over recent years with great admiration,” he said.
With both clubs priding themselves on their family-friendly, social and inclusive club cultures, there are a number of synergies that are evident between the two growing AFL clubs.
“The passion for the game in the women’s competition and especially at Auburn is something everybody can profit from,” says Camden Club Captain Josiah Ayling.
“We’ve adopted the women from Auburn as our own for the finals. It’s a relationship that we hope will add an amazing new dimension to both clubs over time,” he said.
