TRFM Gippsland League has officially launched its 2015 finals series.
The series opens at Moe’s Ted Summerton Reserve on Saturday, with Maffra taking on Traralgon in a qualifying final matchup that shows the fierceness of this season’s competition.
The Eagles only missed out on top spot on the ladder by percentage and now face the only team to have bested them in the second half of the season.
Speaking at today’s launch at Traralgon Recreation Reserve, TRFM Gippsland League chair Greg Maidment said this year’s finals series promised to be one of the tightest in many years.
“Leongatha and Maffra have had outstanding seasons, but Traralgon has beaten Maffra, Wonthaggi Power knocked off Leongatha and Traralgon, and Sale was the first team to beat Leongatha, so we’ve seen that anything can happen,” Maidment said.
“We chose the slogan ‘Tradition. Courage. Glory.’ for this year’s finals series, because those words will be fitting for whichever team comes out on top.”
Wonthaggi Power and Sale and will battle for survival in Sunday’s elimination final at Morwell Recreation Reserve.
Minor premier Leongatha earned the week off and will face the winner of Maffra and Traralgon at Ted Summerton Reserve in week two of the finals series.
The A-grade netball competition has been equally competitive, with just four wins separating first from fifth at the end of the home-and-away season.
Maidment has seen dozens of games this season and said there was little between the top five teams.
“We’ve had some fantastic games this season and I really believe we could see a few upsets in the final series,” he said.
“A lot of people think the senior football is a two-horse race, but Traralgon seems to match up well against Maffra and I wouldn’t discount Wonthaggi or Sale either.
“Wonthaggi made the grand final last year and with Jason Gram back in the side Sale has got that bit of extra quality as well.
“Traralgon has been the standout team in A-grade netball, but Drouin, Sale and Moe have all proven they can beat the Maroons and Morwell boasts plenty of finals experience and will be another threat.”
The 2015 TRFM Gippsland League grand finals will be played at Traralgon Recreation Reserve on Saturday, 26 September.
