It was a final round that produced an edge of your seat finish, with one game deciding the final finish position of three clubs.
Footscray claimed the final spot in the top four, dislodging Essendon after the Bulldogs regained the lead late from a fast finishing Werribee to do enough to earn the double chance.
That match consigned Essendon to fifth and Werribee to seventh, with the game between Box Hill Hawks and Williamstown left to decide whetehr the Seagulls would finish third or fourth.
Third it was as they provided the perfect finals warm up defeating the Hawks at home.
Let’s take a look at the final two games:
WILLIAMSTOWN 11.16 (82) d BOX HILL HAWKS 10.8 (68)
Box Hill Hawks 1st 14-4 / Williamstown 3rd 13-5
Nick Meese in the ruck and Sam Dunnell up forward helped lead Williamstown to victory against ladder leaders Box Hill Hawks. The 14-point final margin should have been more, if not for inaccuracy that hampered the Seagulls kicking 16 behinds for the after. Despite the loss Box Hill did have one win on the day, with Sam Grimley's one goal enough to give him a share of the Frosty Miller Medal lead in the final round, claiming the shared honour for teh second year, this year with Port Melbourne's Jordan Lisle and Richmond's Liam McBean - all finishing on 42 goals for the season.
Leading goalkickers: Williams 2 (Box Hill) / Dunnell 4, Conway 2 (Williamstown)
FOOTSCRAY 9.11 (65) d WERRIBEE 8.13 (61)
Werribee 7th 11-7 / Footscray 4th 12-6
After a strong start, kicking the first five goals of the game, the Bulldogs let Werribee back into the match as Majak Daw took control. The Tigers led going into the final term, but were unable to defeat a determined Bulldogs lineup. For the second year running the Bulldogs changed its first round finals opponent with a last minute win, again claiming the double chance and a tilt at back to back premierships with a late Tom Boyd goal 28 minutes into the final term.
Leading goalkickers: Daw 3, Wood 2 (Werribee) / Buchanan 3 (Footscray)
