Booysen bounces back to sink Inglewood

Josh Booysen missed an early penalty and then scored two second-half goals as a determined Subiaco claimed a 3-1 win over Inglewood United at Rosalie Park.
The game was only three minutes old when Booysen blazed his penalty over the bar but he need not have worried as his contribution after the break was the key to hard-working
Subiaco’s sixth win of the season.
David Sesay had opened the scoring for the visitors in the 22nd minute before Ger Fitzgerald equalised on the half hour. Booysen made amends for his early penalty miss with a fine header in the 59th minute before lashing a shot in off a post in the 73rd minute.
“I thought it was a good performance and we deserved to win,” Booysen said. “It was a bit scrappy in the first half but in the second half we tightened up and deserved to take the victory.
“The penalty was terrible but I had to get over it and get back into the game and luckily made up for it with the two goals. It’s very satisfying.”
Chances came thick and fast in an even first half as Subiaco’s Kevin White hooked wide an early opportunity and Kenny Keogh rattled a post for Inglewood.
Keogh then turned provider with a cross from the right that Andrija Jukic headed over.
Irishman Keogh was causing havoc and his next contribution allowed Sesay to crash the ball home from close range.
But the goal only served to spark Subiaco into action and Fitzgerald accepted the invitation to head home the equaliser.
Rory Feely, who was introduced for Kevin White after 36 minutes, almost had Subiaco in front on the stroke of half time but after wriggling his way into a shooting position his powerful shot was off target.
Youngster Paul Zimarino, who is heading to Spain next week for a trial with Real Valladolid, had an appeal for a penalty turned down early in the second half before firing off target following Keogh’s cross.
But Subiaco hit the front when Booysen’s header found the net from Rory Feely’s cross and the home side would have extended their lead but for Aleks Vrteski’s save to deny Matt Akehurst and Jovo Pavlovic’s timely challenge to thwart Booysen.
The third Subiaco goal owed much to Akehurst’s trickery in beating Pavlovic and then picking out Booysen, whose shot crashed off the inside of the left post before nestling in the net.
Jukic was disappointed that Inglewood had been unable to seize the initiative after taking the lead.
“We didn’t really have much to play for but we wanted to show a bit of pride and win for ourselves,” he said.
“We had a good win against Stirling last week and everyone was buzzing for it. We wanted to finish as high as we can, so it’s not the best feeling to lose like that.”
