GRFC (WOMEN’S DIVISION) - ROUND 17 PREVIEW
KARDINIA International College will sew up the minor premiership if it can either win or draw against its nearest rival Deakin Ducks in the penultimate round of matches in the GRFC Women’s Division this coming weekend.
Although it was originally fixtured as a Deakin home game, due to the unavailability of Duck’s ground for the remainder of the season Kardinia will assume home ground advantage in the ‘Battle of the Students’ clash on Saturday.
Kardinia is currently six points ahead of Deakin on the competition standings and a solitary point from the clash with Deakin will be sufficient to guarantee a top spot finish.
All eyes will be on the competition’s leading goal scorer, Madeleine Lee Gow, who will be eager to add to her impressive season’s tally of 32 goals.
Meanwhile, for Kardinia, the twin strikeforce of Sofia Harrop and Stephanie Cameron will be battling it out for second spot on the goalscorers’ standings. Harrop is currently in second spot with 19 goals, while Cameron is in fourth spot with 17 goals, separated by third placed Millie Livesey from Geelong SC Red, who has scored 18 goals this season.
Saturday’s big blockbuster at Kardinia College will kick off at 1:00pm.
Livesey’s Geelong SC Red, meanwhile, will be in action against bottom side Corio Bay SC at Howard Glover Reserve. With Corio Bay having conceded 65 goals in 16 matches, there is every chance that Livesey will add further goals to her season’s tally.
Third placed Barwon SC and 4th placed Surfside Waves will be out to guarantee a finals’ berth, when they tackle 7th placed Barwon Heads SC and 8th placed Surf Coast FC respectively.
The Waves will host their clash as part of the Pink Sock Charity Round at Shell Road Reserve on Friday night at 7:30pm, while Barwon will travel to Barwon Heads Village on Saturday to try to secure the single point they need to guarantee a finals’ spot.
In the only other Women’s Division game on Saturday, 6th placed Breakwater Eagles will take on 9th placed Geelong SC at the White Eagle House in a game that has little meaning to either side.
