The first of South Toowoomba’s 3 wins on the day came in the U12’s where they comfortably accounted for Dalby 53-12. The win was set up through the first 3 quarters where the Swans were kept goalless. James Packer continued his stellar season for the Bombers with 5 goals while Ben Matthews chimed in with Dalby’s only 2 majors of the day in the last quarter.
The U14’s clash between Souths and Coolaroo was much like the 12’s with Souths opening up a commanding half time lead and while the Bombers were inaccurate they controlled the majority of the match to come away 51-35 point victors. Tyler Debney and Justus Liddicoat were Souths best in this game while Rowan Anderson battled manfully with Jared Jeitz for the Roos.
Dalby AFC recorded their first win of the 2015 finals in the U16’s with a comprehensive victory over 2014 U16 premiers Highfields. Only 3 points separated these teams at the first change before the Swans clicked into gear booting 12 goals to 2 from that point on to record a 95-25 point victory.
The first senior game of the day saw Highfields snatch a remarkable 14.4 (88) to 11.13 (79) win in overtime against Chinchilla in the division two elimination final.
Chinchilla led by 17 points at the final change before the fast-finishing Lions fought back to level the score at 78 a piece at full time, booting 10 points to 1 in extra time.
Highfields will face the winner of the South Burnett and Dalby clash in the preliminary final
The resurgent South Toowoomba senior men’s side is just one game away from the AFL Darling Downs grand final after defeating University 13.8 (86) to 10.13 (73) in Saturday's elimination final at Rockville Park.
The Bombers lost four of their first six games, but they have stormed into the finals with the win over Uni making it six straight and 3 straight against the Cougars.
Souths got the jump on the Cougars with a 5.2 to 1.5 opening quarter, but the rest of the match was more closely contested
The Bombers edged ahead by a point in each of the next two quarters while Uni started to get a roll on in a scrappy 3.0 to 2.5 third term.
The Cougars came home strongly, kicking 5.1 to 3.3 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to keep their season alive.
Souths now await the winner of this weekend's qualifying final between Coolaroo and Goondiwindi.
In the final game of the day the Bombers women’s side, who won the inaugural women's title in 2013, couldn’t keep up with a fast finishing Coolaroo who ran out comfortable victors 87-31.
Coolaroo will take on either Dalby or the Tigers for a place in the decider.
