Points have been shared in previous games played throughout the regular season between these 2 teams with Chinchilla coming through in the round 4. match 87-45 and Highfields reversing this outcome in round 9. 81-45. A combined differential of 6 points separates the two sides as they enter Saturday’s game which makes one think that this should be a close encounter.
The Lions however may hold a slight form advantage over the Suns as they inflicted the only loss of the season on the top of the table South Burnett Saints last week. The Suns on the other hand had a comprehensive 144 point victory over the last placed Lockyer Valley Demons.
In this game Suns spearhead Wayne Webber continued his impressive season up forward booting 13 goals and taking his season tally to 44 goals just 2 shy of Saints small forward Ty Snow (46 goals). Remarkably 51 individual players have pulled on a Suns jersey in season 2015 with consistent standout performances from the likes of Cameron Percival, Daniel Wood and club president Jay Paget. Percival is very hard to match up on with his size and agility making him a handful for opposition sides while Wood, a Pittsworth junior, has found his feet in 2015 as an exceptional senior player. Add the hardness of Paget to the mix and the goal kicking form of Webber and there is no wonder why the Suns are entering their first ever finals series.
The Lions started the season slowly but has clicked into gear at the right end of the season showcased by last week’s defeat of previously undefeated and 2014 finalists South Burnett. For the Lions Luke Bianchi and Robert Baker have amassed 52 goals between them in only 18 games played this season. While Colin Stewart and Lewis Macivor have been the most consistent performers for the club with 21 times named in best from 25 appearances. Young gun Will Grundon has also had an outstanding season and will give the Lions much needed hardness around the ball a crucial element in finals matches.
Late season form says that the Lions hold a slight edge in this game but the thrill of a first finals campaign may be enough to will the Suns group over the line.
