Club favorite Buller was the unlikely final quarter hero for the Cutters, who held on to their slender lead despite the last of Matt Walsh's six goals cutting the margin back to one late in the game.
The 11.2 (78) to 11.10 (76) result put the Cutters into second, a win in Port Douglas this weekend enough to secure it ahead of Finals. "To win on Cazalys in a tight on against Saints probably instills some beleif in a young team," player coach Daniel Lock said. "They missed out last year in finals so its nice to know we can play well on this ground. Now we take that up to Port and to beat them would be pretty handy."
Knowing what was left to play for, Lock said there were no crazy celebrations planned after the win, "I gave them half an hour and then it was on to worrying about Port," he said, "I thought we played well to keep them to that sort of total, but there were still too many turnovers for my liking. She was a pretty physical game - it was all about winning that leather, there will be some sore bodies."
