The 2015 finals series has arrived and kicking off this weekend’s round of elimination semi-finals is the 3rd vs 4th line up between Dalby and South Toowoomba in the U12 age division.
These teams met only once this season back in round 3 with the Bombers taking the points in a close encounter 43-34. Scores were locked at 28 a piece at the end of the 3rd quarter in this game with South Toowoomba running out the game in slightly better fashion producing a 9 point victory made sweeter as it was played at Dalby's home.
But how much one reads into this result is unknown. On results alone Dalby have had the more consistent season. They have scored more points for than any other team in the U12 age division with 1612 which is more than double that of South Toowoomba 727. They also have 3 of the top 5 league leading goal scorer in their line up with Ben Matthews (56), Tim Mauch (38) and Sam Lequesne (32).
On the flip side Souths have relied heavily on the ball winning ability of new recruit and QLD representative James Packer. Packer has been a revelation in 2015 with his silky skills and penetrating left boot making him one of the favourites for the U12 league best and fairest this season. Packer has been supported tremendously all year by classy midfielders Owen Debney and Nicholas Nugent.
Debney, Nugent and Packer all have the ability to win contested ball but they will need the support of the entire Souths team if they are to overcome the scoring prowess of the Dalby Swans. This battle looms as a genuine arm wrestle and may come down to whoever makes the most of their scoring opportunities on the large expanses of Rockville Oval.
