The Bombers continue their premiership quest, while the Magpies retire, a much improved 2015 season, but in the end outgunned. Good wins to the Tigers in the reserves and colts, and they go forward with confidence in both grades.
Excellent conditions at Elliston, promised for a great day of football The match very much in the balance at half time, only three goals in it, but the Bombers moved away steadily thereafter. Experience and poise from the men in black and red, finding targets forward when it mattered. Robbie Marshall four goals and Simon Webb three, both dangerous all day. The Maggies shared goals around, nine singles but turned away by a reliable Bomber defence. Rowan Chester leading the way for the Bombers, his leg speed is impressive and hits his targets. Adam Braendler again, the ability to run and carry the ball, with a penetrating kick, every possession hurts opposition as it means big metreage down ground. Dion Pittaway a great game and he is important to the Bomber chances going forward, Simon Webb, great hands and bobs up in good forward positions regularly, Ryan Watson another hustle bustle game, plenty of it and hard worker.
The Maggies not disgraced by a long way, coach Zwar pleased with the commitment and effort of his boys, oh for a big marking target forward (a la Jarden Stoetzer for the Bombers). Leading the best was Henry Zwar himself, hard ball winner and selfless determination, Harry Petty, for a fair while at centre half forward, some great grabs and another who’s effort can never be questioned. Ian Jericho, mainly centre half back, possibly one of the hardest jobs in Mid West, standing Jarden Stoetzer, but acquitted himself well, Remi North around the centre, a break out year for him, and Scott Williams playing another great game.
Wirrulla boast a good side, and will worry either Hawks or Bulldogs in the Preliminary final, excellent aerial skills and key ball winners all over the oval. Mick Kessell is a master at assessing opposition strengths and weaknesses, no doubt will have a note book filled at the second semi next week.
The Tigers broke through in the reserves, a convincing 39 points, winning three of the four quarters. As always with successful finals teams, defence is a key, and to this end holding the Wudinna United side to two goals is a credit to them. Better players for the Tigers, Angus Gunn, Ryan Broad, Sam Wakefield and young gun Charlie Williams. A scattering of A Grade experience assists and the Districts boys take confidence into the Preliminary final knowing that they are the only side left without their A Grade playing. The Magpies best served by Mick Mitton, Kevin Cummings and Craig Brands battled hard all day, just could find the routes the regular score.
Tigers coach Winks Curtis is quietly confident, (rightly so!), of his teams chances going forward, those few extra to choose from at team selection is a luxury others dont have, (a luxury rarely enjoyed coaching B Grade at all really!). A barnstorming finish to the minor round, look out for these blokes!
Entertaining game in the colts, with only two goals in it at three quarter time, then the Western Districts boys unleased a devastating ten straight goal burst in the last quarter, to four by Elliston, opening the margin beyond what it appeared on field. A bag of goals the Charlie Williams, eight! He led the Tigers best, along with Josh Horgan, Steve Brands and Joel Kenny. For the Roosters, Kosta and Yanni Paul, Cooper Venning and Gorn Tree is the best. Elliston exits now but will look forward with anticipation, they have some wonderful players in development.
All attention next week to the Wirrulla 2nd Semi Finals.
