A week can be a long time in football, and the Southern Mallee Giants have produced a massive turn around in that time. Coming off a disappointing defeat last week, they have come up with their best win for the season, smashing Ouyen United by 125 points.
With many players having their colours lowered to the Roos last week, the Giants had a point to prove. They did this with a comprehensive 21-player, four-quarter effort. Kain Robins had a day out playing deep in the forward line, hauling a bag of 12 goals. No Andrew Jardine and an injury to Colin Keatch in the second quarter left the Demons’ defence undermanned. Lachy Foott and Ben Webster also got off the leash with 5 goals each.
There were key players missing for the Demons and the Giants were able to exploit a few mismatches across the ground. With a need for some extra grunt through the midfield Brad Vallance was quickly thrown into the middle for the Demons. While he was one of their best, it allowed Sam Weddell to run and create off half-back, and set up many forward thrusts as the Giants piled on the goals.
Dean Staunton and Henry Armour battled hard around the stoppages and when they rested forward. However, the Giants had winners across every line. Clinton Burdett has been consistent all year and Fabian Dorbolo was welcomed back after missing the last few games.
While the Giants will be happy with an accurate 42 shots on goal, they will be just as delighted with the defensive side of their game.
Woomelang Lascelles overcame an even first half against Walpeup Underbool to run out victors by ten goals. Trent Donnan was the leader in a strong midfield performance for the Cats as they marched away with the game in the second half.
Walpeup Underbool worked hard to stay in the contest led by Matt Palmer across half back and with Ben Fisher continuing his good form the game seemed destined for a close finish. That was not to be, as the Cats began to outnumber the Roos around the ball and were able to find space when needed to kick away.
The end margin was ten goals as the Cats put the foot down to run over the Roos in a sometimes-heated second half. Alwyn Davey showed plenty of class with a four-goal performance for Woomelang Lascelles, which had ten goal scorers. Charles McAdam also provided plenty of run through the midfield and assisted his team to hold on to second spot on the ladder.
