MURCHISON v VIOLET TOWN
There is a virtual last roll of the dice for Brent Chapman and his Murchison team-mates if they wish to figure in the September action.
Defeat to Stanhope and a big win for Violet Town has left the 2013 premier two games and percentage behind the 2012 champion.
Even if Violet Town was to drop this game, it will still hold the upper hand as long as Sean Horsburgh’s men can deliver victories in two of their three remaining matches.
They have a reasonably soft draw and would be expected to at least win two of their remaining three fixtures.
But Horsburgh knows his playing group will have a vastly more challenging time against the Grasshoppers than they got from Longwood.
While, Brent Chapman is fully aware his boys just must play better and stay in the contest longer than they did against three placed Stanhope.
Leigh Lugg, Tony Fulton, Bo Harrison, Greg Dyer, Tim Ross and Shaun Silver were the four quarter contributors in the big win against Longwood.
For Murchison, they need big games from their A grade talent like Luke Chapman, Jamie Jones, the Ewart brothers and Steven Burns to be in with a chance of defeating Violet Town.
A defeat for Murchison would spell the end of its finals hopes for this year, so expect it to be desperate for the whole game.
OTHERS
In the remaining four games of the round, the top teams are pitted up against the out of contention and lower ranked teams.
Ardmona host Lancaster; Merrigum travels to Rushworth, Longwood faces a battle against Avenel while Undera and Tallygaroopna are playing for pride only.
WHAT WE LEARNT
1. Stanhope’s premiership aspirations are gathering momentum with each win. It has now not lost since copping a hiding to Merrigum nearly two months ago. It has claimed some good scalps in the string of wins, including Avenel, Murchison and Undera to name a few.
2. A meeting will take place this month among the Longwood faithful to discuss the future direction of the club.
3. Girgarre registered its biggest win of the season in accounting for Ardmona last round.
4. Two of the three in the race to win the goal-kicking award failed to trouble the scorers over the weekend.
5. Harley Taylor-Lloyd has been a real win for Nagambie this year, having kicked 40 goals in his return to the club.
My tips: Undera, Lancaster, Avenel, Merrigum and Violet Town
