As we head into round 14 the ladder in the senior competition is starting to take shape with the top 6 teams, 2 or more games clear of 7th (Mooroopna) and 8th (Mansfield) this sets up a cracking final 5 weeks.
The seniors as we all know is the “cream” of the day some cracking football played with some who have played at the highest level and many footballers who could have played AFL but chose to stay and support their local community. The u18s is also given a fair bit of airtime as it’s the next generation of superstars not only for the local teams but also the next batch of AFL draftees can come from this group of young athletes.
But today I want to talk about the competition that is sometimes missed, I have heard this competition called several names over my years of being involved in football - the two’s, the magoos, seconds, ressies, or as most people know it the reserves.
In my experience within club land as a footballer, a coach, and an administrator the reserves were the life blood of the club. It is a very eclectic group of footballers that come together.
You have the fringe players who float in and out of the senior team based on form or injury; you have the 19 year olds who are in their first true year of senior football; you tend to have a handful of mature players who have played at senior level with the club, bleed the colours and want to remind the group what the club is about and wrapping up the remainder of the team is the players who love the club and wants to keep playing footy with his mates.
The boys that played in the reserves were usually at training two nights a week, and on Thursday night always had a meal and a cheeky couple of drinks as a reward to themselves for the effort they put on the track.
They were always the first ones to put their name down to help out the club if they were short of anything on game day (before or after their game).
They would show up to every function (early) and be some of the last to leave, they absolutely loved the club and the comradery that this group had was second to none, and of course footy trips they tended to outshine the seniors. They would do anything for each other.
So for the next few weeks I would like all the supporters, administrators and general fans of the GOTAFE GVFL to turn up just an hour earlier than you normally would (if watching the seniors) or hang around for an hour or so if your following the u18s. This will enable you to watch some footballers who not only have great skills but also an amazing passion for their club.
As a final note I want to thank Shepparton Printing Services and the Clark family who not only help to put this amazing publication together week in week out but also sponsor an awarded voted for by the time keepers in the reserves (The SPS Award).
