BEARD’S GROWING AMBITION

Star Sturt utility Kory Beard has given up on his AFL dream.
But that doesn’t mean the 25-year-old has nothing to play for as Beard approaches his 100th SANFL match against West at City Mazda Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking on SANFL Radio, Beard – who made his league debut with Port Adelaide Magpies in 2009 – is determined to taste September success with the Double Blues.
And while his hopes have been all but dashed this year, playing in the major round last season has certainly whet the appetite of the competition’s best swingman.
Originally from the tiny town of Lock on the Eyre Peninsula, Beard talks about his upbringing on the family farm, admitting it was initially a challenge not being able to ride a motorbike around the paddock while living in the city.
The West End State player also reveals how tough it was to make the move from Alberton to Unley at the end of 2013 albeit it was made a little easier by joining Zane Kirkwood and James Watt at Oxford Terrace.
Measuring in at a nice size of 195cm and 93kg, Beard has regularly shown he is equally adept up forward as he is in his usual defensive post, revealing he prefers to be a member of Sturt’s back six.
