GEELONG REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE (MEN’S DIVISION ONE - ROUND 13 REVIEW)
Bottom side Corio SC caused a major upset, annihilating top side Surfside Waves 5-1 to jump off the bottom of the ladder, following the completion of an action packed Round 13 of the GRFC Men’s Division One competition last weekend.
Whilst Hume Reserve has not witnessed much triumph this year for the Eagles’, Sunday’s game will definitely go down as the highlight, so far, of the current season.
Unfortunately, the goal scorers of both Corio and Surfside were not submitted.
With the Waves capitulating to Corio, in the neighbouring suburb of Bell Post Hill Geelong Rangers became the fourth club in as many weeks to take over the top spot following their 2-0 victory over the previously 3rd placed Deakin Ducks.
Gary Burton and Scott Davison were the scorers for the new league leaders at Myers Reserve, while the loss – their second consecutive loss - saw the Ducks drop down to fourth spot.
In the only other Division One game, Mitchell Fuller scored the only goal of the game as his Barwon SC defeated the Breakwater Eagles 1-0 to leap into second spot on the ladder.
With 13 rounds completed, Rangers leads the competition on 23 points, one ahead of second placed Barwon and two ahead of third placed Surfside Waves. Fourth placed Deakin and fifth placed Drysdale both have 19 points, with Drysdale in the enviable position of having a game in hand.
