GEELONG REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE (WOMEN’S ROUND 13 REVIEW)
KARDINIA International College has extended its lead to six points at the top of the Women’s Division standings, after overcoming Barwon SC 2-1 in a keenly contested Round 13 encounter at Grovedale Reserve on Saturday.
It was a thrilling encounter between the competition’s top two teams and in the end it was an own goal that separated the two combatants. Drina Marincic scored Barwon’s only goal, while Lucy Kania was the scorer of Kardinia’s match winning effort.
Prolific goalscorer Madeleine Lee Gow hit the back of the net three times as Deakin Ducks defeated Surfside Waves 4-2 to overtake the Waves into third spot. Deakin’s other goal scorer was Jacquie Denning, while Nicole Mills and Gina Murphy were the scorers for the Ocean Grove side.
Andi Jean was a notable returnee in the Deakin line-up, after having fully recovered from a knee injury.
Breakwater Eagles leapfrogged Barwon Heads into 6th spot on the ladder, after defeating the Hammerheads 3-1 at the White Eagle Club with Nicole Carter, Shannon Duffy and Hannah Teesdale all scoring singles for the winners.
In other games, the league’s leading goalscorer, Millie Livesey, added to her season’s tally with the only goal of the game as Geelong SC Red defeated Surf Coast FC 1-0 at Stead Park, while in the second game of the Stead Park double header, bottom side Corio Bay recorded its first win of the season, defeating second last placed Geelong SC 2-1.
