2. Andrew McConnell
Club: East Coast
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Previous Clubs: Sandringham (2008-10), Noble Park (2010, 2013)
Number in last years count: N/A as playing in another league
Analysis:
It takes a special player to make it up the pointy end of the count especially given the players who have made up the count so far. McConnell fits the bill and would have been a more than appropriate number 1 which speaks volumes of the depth of the league currently.
A natural midfielder, McConnell is impressively battling with midfield teammate Trent Stubbs and Manly-Warringah’s Brayden Fowler for the illustrious Stan Milton Medal. This is an amazing feat for someone standing at just 186cm and 83kg.
The 27 year old known as “Jude or Andy” by his teammates, has high level playing experience with a VFL outfit in Sandringham and Noble Park in the lucrative Eastern Football League. For the latter he was named Best on Ground in the 2010 senior Grand Final.
For someone who rates his worst football moment as “whenever I get pinged for holding the ball”, he always seems to be one step ahead. A big game player, McConnell showed his class when he was rightfully named Best on Ground for AFL Sydney in the representative win against AFL Canberra following his 5 goal haul (playing in the midfield) including two goals late to seal the tight victory.
McConnell has an amazing knack of drifting forward and kicking goals despite his midfield position having kicked hauls of 5, 7 and 5 goals in the last 3 matches! Averaging close to 30 possessions per game, his influence is significant and is one of the many reasons why the Eagles look to be the team to beat.
No wonder East Coast are competition favourites when you have players like McConnell able to turn a game on its head.
