In two key decisions the Grand Final retains its traditional place on the day after the AFL Grand Final and the current ‘cluster’ formation will be abolished in favour of a rolling draw with a more regular home, away, home, away format.
GOTAFE GVFL Chairman David Roff was very happy with the outcome of the meeting.
"The Board commissioned a club survey following the June Delegates meeting to gather feedback and to have clubs prioritize certain aspects of the fixture" he said.
"The results were presented to clubs last night and where there was not a clear direction from the survey we were able to have a discussion and clubs voted on their preferences."
"The parameters for the fixture going forward are now determined and the detail of the fixture can be put together over the coming months."
"A fixture development process was also agreed upon and this will now be implemented to allow clubs to have input on specific requests and to negotiate regarding night games, Sundays, special occasions, etc."
Mooroopna President Darren Hall was also pleased that key structural decisions had now been taken.
"It was great process undertaken from the beginning and to see the responses to the survey highlighting exactly what the clubs want" he said.
"The ability for clubs to have a more traditional Home and Away fixture will also help with membership, continuity and attendance at games."
"We are looking forward to season 2016 to hopefully be a bumper year for all clubs"
The key outcomes from the survey and last night’s meeting were:
- The Grand Final to be played in its traditional slot on the Sunday after AFL Grand Final Day.
- The season will take place over 25 weeks
- The fixture will contain 18 games for each club
- There will be two byes (AFL Vic Country Championships and Vic Country representative game)
- There will be one split round
- There will be four weeks of finals
- The cluster arrangement of fixture will no longer apply with a rolling draw to now be implemented
- A fixturing focus will be to achieve a more consistent ‘home, away, home away’ outcome for clubs
- A process will be implemented allowing for clubs to submit fixture requests for consideration and then also receive a window of time to negotiate with other clubs for night games, Sunday games, etc
