The AFL Sydney Round 13 Rising Star nominee is Connor Owen-Auburn of Pennant Hills.
Connor first played junior footy with North Ryde. When his family moved to the NT, he played with the Palmerston Magpies in the strong Darwin competition before joining the St Clair Crows as an Under 14 in 2012 where he played three seasons of junior footy after returning to Sydney. He has also been a regional and school-boy representative during his years as a junior.
In 2015, now 17, Connor joined Pennant Hills starting in the Under 19s (3 games) before earning selection to the senior side in the Round 11 match against East Coast Eagles. He is also a GWS Academy player and has played 4 matches with the UWS Giants in the NEAFL. He was also selected in the NSW/ACT RAMs team that defeated Oakleigh Rangers in May earlier this year.
After a baptism of fire in a difficult match against East Coast, Connor was one of the key members of the Premier Division team’s inspiring come-from-behind victory over Manly in Round 12. One of his numerous possessions, a look-away handball for a goal-assist, was skilfully executed and a real crowd-pleaser.
Connor played his third consecutive senior match against Sydney University last weekend and again impressed with his skill and maturity. He kicked two of the team’s 13 goals and was named amongst the best. Premier Division Coach, Chris Yard, is full of praise for Connor, highlighting his poise and sure hands while also being hard at the ball and an exceptional tackler.
So impressed was Demon’s veteran and Club Patron, Gus McKernan, he remarked how he thought Connor was a “Special Talent”; rare praise from someone who knows more than a little bit about footy!
The Club looks forward to a long career at Penno for Connor, or even hopefully at a higher level should he aspire for greater honours.
