GEELONG REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE - WOMEN’S ROUND 12 REVIEW)
LEAGUE leader Kardinia International College extended its lead at the summit of the Women’s Division to five points, following an emphatic 9-0 drubbing of Surf Coast FC in Round 12 action last Saturday afternoon.
The lop-sided encounter at Kardinia College, in Bell Post Hill, saw three Kardinia players register a hat-trick apiece: Stephanie Cameron, Charlotte Gittins and Sofia Harrop.
Meanwhile, across town at Grovedale Reserve, Deakin sharpshooter Madeleine Lee Gow doubled her season’s tally to eight goals after bagging four in the Ducks’ 5-0 thrashing of second placed Barwon. To rub salt into the Barwon team’s wounds, Deakin’s only other goal was a Barwon own goal.
As a result of Barwon’s capitulation, third placed Surfside Waves have drawn level in second spot – albeit with a slightly inferior goal difference – after easily accounting for bottom side Corio Bay SC 4:0 at Howard Glover Reserve.
Gina Murphy scored a double while Cath Sattler and Nicole Mills both registered singles to give the Waves their eight win of the season.
In other games, it was a bad day for Geelong SC’s two teams with7th placed Breakwater Eagles overcoming a dogged Geelong SC Red to prevail 2-1 in a tight contest, while Barwon Heads SC accounted for Geelong’s first team 3:0.
Although Kardinia has opened up a handy five point gap at the top, an interesting tussle for second spot is developing with Barwon (+24 goal difference) and Surfside (+23) sharing second spot with 27 points apiece and Deakin Ducks in fourth spot with 26 points and a +43 goal difference.
