12. Matthew Carey
Club: Pennant Hills
Position: Half Forward Flank
Number in last years count: 17
Analysis:
“King” Carey has done it all in Sydney football.
At 28, Matthew has been a member of representative AFL Sydney teams from 2006-2009 and 2012-2015, being captain in 2013 and 2015. He came to prominence early, being the leading goal kicker in the Under 18 competition in 2004, kicking 126 goals, in one game he kicked 21 goals 4 behinds.
His ability to read the game and pace are the main attributes of his play. His raking left foot kicking and agility is the key to him being an uncompromising competitor.
Carey has been co-captain of the club since season 2011, won the Club Best & Fairest in 2008 with Alex Goodall and was named Footballer of the Year at club level in 2008 and 2012. 2008 also saw Matthew take out the Premier Division League Best and Fairest Award, the Phelan Medal.
The one thing that has eluded him to date is captaining his Premier Division side to a premiership victory with defeat in the last two seasons but at 28 and Pennant Hills consistent competitiveness this dream may well come to fruition.
