Five teams recovered from significant deficits to record victories in a thrilling round of Peter Jackson VFL action last weekend.
Two Round 13 matches were decided by goals kicked in the dying moments of play, with Box Hill’s Sam Grimley and Geelong’s Shane Kersten the heroes.
Grimley’s goal with 30 seconds left to play stopped North Ballarat from pulling off a big upset over the ladder leaders, after the Roosters led by seven points at half time and missed several chances to put the game away in the last quarter at Box Hill City Oval.
Kersten helped snatch a nail-biting win for the Cats over Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval, with his goal on the final siren putting Geelong two points up just in the nick of time. The Cats had only hit the lead for the first time in the match six minutes into the final term before the Tigers answered and then Geelong responded once again.
The biggest comeback of the weekend was produced by Sandringham, with the Zebras breaking Coburg hearts after a scoreless first quarter saw them 40 points in arrears at quarter time at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. But slowly and surely, Sandy edged its way back into the contest, finally hitting the front in time-on of the last quarter with a goal to Yilber Zijai.
Meanwhile, Richmond trailed the Northern Blues by 15 points shortly after half time in the slop at Preston Oval, but slammed on seven of the last eight goals of the game to power to a 24-point victory.
Even Footscray, runaway 68-point winners against Collingwood at VU Whitten Oval, trailed the Magpies by 19 points early in the second term.
Just like the weather, these results were wild.
