13. Damian Bonney
Club: Manly-Warringah
Position: On-Baller
Number in last years count: N/A as in another league
Analysis:
Bonney didn’t take up the game until late but has made up for lost time with his skills and ability to read the play putting him in the top echelon of players in Sydney. He was a late convert to AFL, being raised in rugby league stronghold- Ipswich and playing basketball at a state level alongside Kurt Tippett and against the likes of Scott Pendlebury.
Esteemed coach and winning NEAFL representative tactician, John Blair rated his potential whilst he was at Morningside saying he was a “readymade AFL player.” At Morningside, he played 100 games and was club Best and Fairest in 2010, also representing Queensland in their famous win over Tasmania in that year.
The half-back, turned midfielder played with Sydney Hills (now East Coast Eagles) from 2013-14 and joined the Sydney University NEAFL program this year where he was mini-drafted to Manly this year where he has divided his time. He has had a real impact with Manly, in particular in their after the siren win over his former club the Eagles in Round 1 where he was influential.
He was a key player and among the best six players in AFL Sydney’s win over Canberra in June. He has averaged a goal a game this year showing he can be dangerous either going or resting up forward.
