Analysis:
Much has been said of East Coast Eagles attack but it is often started by Emery from the defensive half.
Emery has made quite an impact in a short time. He only played his first competitive AFL game at 16 with Glebe. A year later, he was a NSW Scholarship holder with the West Coast Eagles. All in all, he was quite the sportsman at a young age, representing NSW at Cricket, Basketball and AFL- with the NSW/ACT RAMS (2009 TAC Cup player of the year).
The former half-forward is now arguably the best defender in the competition with his body strength and strong marking a feature of his play. Emery reads the play exceptionally and manages to rack up big numbers even when seemingly the ball doesn’t spend mush time in his half. And when he has the ball you know he will use it well to set up the Eagles forward thrusts.
He is well versed with Sydney football, having played with UNSW/ES and North Shore before joining Broadbeach in Queensland. He was impressive with East Coast in the NEAFL last year, averaging 19 disposals at an efficiency of 88%- seeing him finish fifth in the club Best and Fairest.
“Mr Efficiency” is one of the most dangerous players in AFL Sydney.
