Easts Assume Pole Position
Words: Matt Dorman
The premiership is back in Eastern Suburbs Women’s control following a 3-0 win over Peninsula Power Women at AJ Kelly Park on Saturday night.
Two first-half goals and a third inside the final 20 minutes sealed Easts’ return to top spot ahead of Palm Beach SC Women.
Defeat ends a three-match winning run for Power, who remain a point adrift of sixth-placed Olympic FC Women.
Harkana Dixon wasted little time in putting the visitors ahead in Kippa-Ring, netting her sixth of the season in the 11th minute.
With the league-leading Sharks on a bye week, prolific striker Tegan Riding ensured Easts wouldn’t waste the opportunity to make a major move on the ladder by adding a second midway through the first-half.
Power were unable to find a way back into the game before the break and the match continued to drift away in 25 scoreless minutes after the restart.
Recent arrival Emma Pittman broke the standoff with 20 minutes to play by grabbing her first for Easts and securing an important three points.
Speaking after the match, Power coach Gary Ellis acknowledged his team wasn’t at the intensity required to combat their “clinical” opposition.
“I don’t think we were up for it tonight but in saying that Easts played well,” Ellis said.
Easts coach Garrath McPherson was full of pride after returning to the top of the league.
“The performance was very pleasing. The girls continue to improve week in, week out (and I) couldn’t really ask for much more,” McPherson said.
