At the end of Round 10 - the half way mark in the Peter Jackson VFL season - we looked at which players have been scorching the stats sheets as we marked ‘half time’ in the 2015 home-and-away season.
We looked at each of the major stats areas to see who where the players to watch in the second half of the year.
Here is our list of the stats leaders:
King Kick: Nick O’Brien (Essendon)
The 22-year-old AFL-listed Bomber has been racking up the stats as Essendon looks to mould him into a big-bodied ball-winning midfielder. O’Brien leads the league’s kick category to the halfway point of the season with 161, ahead of Werribee’s Matt Hanson and Williamstown’s Mitch Banner, both on 148.
Handball Happy: Ben Jolley (Williamstown)
The evergreen captain of the Seagulls, 29-year-old Jolley hasn’t lost any of his ball-winning ability. The tough midfielder has been at the coalface for Williamstown again this season, dishing off 127 handballs – ahead of Port Melbourne’s Tom O’Sullivan with 125 and Sandringham’s Clint Jones on 124.
Mark Master: Ariel Steinberg (Essendon)
22-year-old Steinberg has developed himself into one of the best defensive readers of the play in the league, and it shows in the AFL-listed Bomber’s clear lead on the marking tally. Steinberg has put his hands around 82 marks in 2015, well ahead of Box Hill’s David Mirra on 70 and Sandringham’s Mitch Brown with 66.
Top Tackler: Nick Holman (Northern Blues)
Carlton-listed Holman is quickly building a reputation for his uncompromising attack on the ball and the man, with the 20-year-old leading the league’s tackle tally on 71. He comes in ahead of renowned hard-nuts Adam Marcon (Williamstown) with 70 and Myles Sewell (North Ballarat) on 69.
Hitout Hero: Shaun Hampson (Richmond)
The 27-year-old AFL-listed Tiger has been dominating opponents in the ruck this season, getting his hand on 355 hitouts despite playing only seven games. Hampson is clear of Werribee’s Daniel Currie (339) and Sandringham’s St Kilda-listed American import Jason Holmes (283).
