The Bombers crash at Streaky Bay, Tigers have their claws clipped at Minnipa and Roosters lose their cock a doodle doo at Elliston.
Bombers first trip to “the Bay” since the rebuild, and have left very empty handed, first loss for the year in the B’s and a fade out in the second half in the A Grade. The Hawk machine too hot to handle after half time as they moved the ball quickly with energetic run and team work. Derick Freeman leading the way, and pleasing that his calf/ leg issues appear to be behind him. Montgomeries out in force, Dale next best and kicking six, Tyson third best, kicking four, Kirk Montgomerie fourth best, stay out of the forward lines Kirk! Pleasing result for coach Paul Evans as this was a real rival.
For Wirrulla, coach Kessell some more homework to do! Some of his players maybe a little underdone with recent injury layoffs, then a few out too. Jarden Stoetzer, on the ball and great game again. Good to see him also putting injury worries behind him. Riley McDonald, elusive on the wing, Jason Henderson always, a very reliable machine, and Shannon Haynes, more up the field this week.
Minnipa hosted a physical encounter delivering on all the promise of two opponents playing for finals aspirations. Long way out from finals but this one had a finals like feel, lots of niggle, a vocal support and maybe a few grey lines being traversed. Good players from both sides, with an even possession of the ball, the Tigers probably burning themselves in front of goal too often, particularly in finding the irresistible uncontested targets of Marshall and Seaman. Only problem is that they play for the opposition!
Good players for Wudinna United, Brad Jericho in the backline, mainly back pocket knocked up getting hard earned passessions, Remi North around the centre, creative and a high possession winner, Sam Buckham long kicking to position from half back, Henry Zwar, banging and crashing, always at the bottom of packs and feeding it out, Jack Wilkins, four goals and mercurial when he gets it. Must again mention the impact of Darryl Marshall and Neil Seaman, when the game was there to be one, they stood up.
Tigers will be disappointed, perhaps not executing the game plan as well as they may have, but good nonetheless. Charlie Williams provided plenty of drive, particularly when he went in the midfield and through the second half of the match, great speed and brave. Scott Feltus, fantastic to watch this man in action, another in and under everything, Joe Williams, excellent aerial work and strong in the contests, Shad Smith another great in the air and plenty of the ball. Locky Mc Innis was stout in defence, but his move forward in the second half was telling, three goals and looked dangerous.
The Centrals boys enjoyed a day out at Elliston, the Roosters undermanned but don’t give anything away. Big Kane Grocke 10 goals, a stirling effort by a young forward. Good marking and great kicking, 10.1 so just what the sometimes inaccurate ‘Dogs need! Jake Bruce leading the way, also great news for the ‘Dogs, Mail Medal 2012 and 2013, but virtually missing for eighteen months with a persistent hamstring, here’s hoping that that is all in the past now! Kane Sampson again!, Kane Grocke, Jake Sampson, must be rating very very highly in Club and league medals, similarly with Jesse Stinger, another good un! Clint Winter notched up four goals but sets up plenty more.
Roosters led by the Williams boys, Matt and Jay. Matthew home during the Port Adelaide bye, and Jay just stays good. Adam Green and Tyson Tree enjoying good matches, always productive. Coach Chad Fleming is doing a great job with a constantly changing list, hard work but it is amazing how things can turn for the better very quickly at Roosterland, this one was a hard day out!
So Mid West takes a spell as the State Country Championships and Kinlough Cup take centre stage. Good Luck to all who will represent our league and zone!
Round 10 finished and everyone has now played a home and away match against each other, a good point to assess clubs fortunes.
West Coast Hawks Still the pace setters and must be beaten by any challengers with eyes on a flag. Fast and skilful.
Central Eyre Very likely challenger again, and starting the get good players back in the side. Must keep their full list come finals, but have all the potential
Wirrulla Big improver this year and struggled to get the best out there on the same day. Have a high expectation and the ability to match, so long as they stay fit.
Wudinna United Another big improver this year, a young list well managed by coach Zwar. A couple still to come in and may well cause heart ache for teams above them
Western Districts Perhaps surprising to most that they find themselves outside the four, forever competitive, but find avenues to goal hard to find. Last year they won four out of their last five matches, beating all currently in the top four along the way, need to do that again this year!
Elliston Unpredictable, list changes regularly and when at their best can challenge all. This may prove to be one of their lower years, which seem to come around every second year, in between are scattered premierships or very close to it.
