2. Maddy Collier
Club: UNSW/ES Stingrays
Position: Midfield
Previous Clubs: Wollongong Saints
Analysis:
Debate raged over the top 2 positions with either Maddi or the eventual Number 1 being more than suitable options. Maddy is a star of the competition at the ripe old age of 19 who already has a Division One League Best & Fairest medal to her name from 2013 when she played with Wollongong.
Right on the radar of both the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons, Collier possesses all the skills and work ethic to be one of the best players for many years to come. Maddy, despite small in stature, is as tough as they come on the field and her trademark attack on the footy and rock solid defence is one opposition clubs know all too well. She has the unique ability to play both as an inside and outside midfielder as she can not only win her own footy in the clinches but also be used as a real attacking weapon across halfback and the midfield.
Exceptionally skilled by foot, a great decision maker and a great awareness on field makes Collier one of the few players in the competition that opposition coaches plan around. Used as an outside midfielder or on the half-back, Maddy sets her side up with her rebound run and carry.
Apart from winning the highest award possible in AFL Sydney at just 17 years of age in a team that only managed a few wins, Collier is quickly building an enviable resume on the Representative scene with numerous games for AFL Sydney as well as most recently where she led the possession tally for NSW/ACT in their match against AFL Victoria. In that match she was clearly among the best on the ground in a side that struggled to have a winner across the ground. Under the eyes of those who matter, she would have certainly done her chances no harm for the second women’s AFL match later this year.
Collier was the off season transfer of the year for UNSW/ES prior to last season and her inclusion into an already strong Stingrays side saw them go all the way to their first Grand Final where they fell agonisingly short against Sydney University. 2015 has seen a strong start by Collier and her side and she will play a pivotal role in them going one step further in 2015.
An out and out star, Collier has the potential to leave a legacy on the AFL Sydney competition which will be hard to match.
