3. Jen Lew
Club: Sydney University Bombers
Position: Midfield
Analysis:
Probably the most consistent footballer within AFL Sydney, you know what you will get from Lew week in week out. One of the toughest players in the competition, Jen is an inside midfielder who has an uncanny knack of winning the football. Not only a major ball winner, Lew’s defence is amongst the most ferocious in the competition with opposition sides knowing when they have been tackled by her.
Lew is the leader of her Sydney University side and has led them to back to back premierships including a Best on Ground performance in 2013.
A perennial vote getter in the League Best & Fairest voting, Lew would be expected to be a real contender for the 2015 Mostyn Medal which would be thoroughly deserved.
Jen also has the honour of playing in the first ever AFL Women’s match when she was drafted alongside Courtney Gum for the Melbourne Demons in the inaugural, and ground breaking match back in 2013.
On the representative level, Jen has also done it all with AFL Sydney selection and captaincy along with State side honours where she has also been captain. In the two representative fixtures she has played in this season, she was named Best on Ground for AFL Sydney in the win over AFL Canberra where she led from the front and then was named Players Player in the more recent State match against AFL Victoria.
One of the most respected players within the league, Jen still has plenty of good football ahead of her but has a legacy that will last.
With the 2015 goal to claim a three-peat, Sydney University will rely heavily on Lew to shoulder much of the in and under grunt work which she is renowned for and will play a key role in achieving that feat.
