No doubt "Match of the Day" status rested at Kyancutta with recent Grand Final combatants West Coast Hawks and Central Eyre facing off. Centrals home ground but no disadvantage to the Hawks there, they enjoy the bigger grounds generally. The Hawks sharp right from the first bounce, rattling on 5 goals 4 even before the "Dogs had their first venture forward. From that point, the match was evenly poised, with the final margin 23 points maybe flattering the "Dogs somewhat, the Hawks errant in fornt of goal. Both sides peiced together some wonderful passages of play in a match that remained open and fast throughout.
Dillon Montgomerie in outstanding form, either on the ground or in the air, each time he touches it, means another Hawk possession thereafter, so damaging! Travis Brown in defence or on the ball at times was great, never beaten in the air, Joe Danis superb in the ruck, stepping up in the absense of Dylan Kelsh and the start of many clearance wins for the Hawks, Kirk Montgomerie another big game in defence, runs and creates all day, just makes good decisions. Dale Montgomerie continues his great last month form and troubled the stats people regularly, Brent Bascombe 5 goals and Nathan Johnson 2 goals provided excellent targets all day, Brentons tussle with Kane Sampson a highlight of the day.
No panic at the Kennell, some good players to return, but they now need to stay sharp to defend the double chance, only percentage separates them from Wirrulla. Jesse Stringer a great day at the office, for four quarters and four goals also, a hard running tackling machine, Jake Sampson, no surprise that he is again in the best, enjoying a great season, Martin Grocke in defence with poise and presence, Kane Sampson again excellent at Full Back,
The Dogs are on the road next week, beachside taking on the Roosters. Still well poised to challenge in September they will be all concentration against an improved Roosters who will provide stern opposition on their home ground. Roosters will need to win this one to give themselves any chance for September action and the middle of winter can see softer grounds and surprising results.
Magpies struck a victory against the Roosters in an open and entertaing match at Wudinna. Two inches of rain in a storm during the week, saw the south side of the oval 450mm under water. Amazingly it all soaked well away and the surface surprisingly firm for the game. Magpies will served by Remi North, an emerging star of the future. Excellent skills and reads the play well, Neil Seaman again high in the best, hard running rebound football and time in the gym has benefitted, Good high mark and disposal. Nick Jensen in the ruck, virtually unassisted, and improving every week, Matthew Greatbatch, a club favourite, puts his head in where you wouldnt drive a truck, winning balls out for the runners. The great H Zwar at it again all day and a towering high flying mark to please the crowd! Sammuel Buckham provided of rebound at half back and then centreline after half time, Matthew Foster great with four goals and David Moyse a cameo back in the A's, a lazy three confirming what everyone else knows, that he 's still got it!
Elliston never gave up but found avenues to goal hard to find. Jay Williams back at his best, and great to see, he is a star of the League and excels at all levels. Wayden Sumner with hard run and skills, Ross Bascomb a class player week in and week out, very happy to have him home at the Mid West Roosters after a stint with Tasman FC Port Lincoln. Evergreen Jack Carter, strength in the defence and a good decision maker. Steve Harrison leg speed at times and Adam Green another to do well
Wudinna United take on the Tigers next week at Minnipa, only a short road journey but a game that could well seal their 2015 finals aspirations if they win, Western Districts are on the up after a slow start to 2015, and have an excellent record against the Magpies in recent years. This match will be tight and better tipped when the teams are announced.
Wirrullla prevailed over the gallant Tigers at the Hangar, in a match not sealed until late. Raining goals early as defensive tactics were thrown out, but the match settled to become hard fought throughout, as is so often the case between these two. Simon Webb a big match leading the best, great to have Jarden Stoetzer back, either forward or centre he is a strong man mountain. Jason Henderson so consistent, Ryan Watson and Rowan Chester all stepping up. Good to see Yanni Kozminski playing after a shoudler scare.
The Tigers, well none other that Scott Feltus. Loves the close hard contest, Shannon Horgan, years of experience but still covers plenty of ground and hard ball winner, Kade Gill, his height is important in a side of generally mide size players, Charlie Williams, an upcoming star and speed to burn. Nathan Hebbermann another in the veteran class playing great footy.
The Bombers now set their sights on the Hawks next week at Streaky Bay, their first venture to the rebuilt ground and the last of the Hawks challengers to do so. This is the venue of the 2015 Grand Final, so important for any team with aspirations of playing that day, to play well at the venue, were talking both of these teams here! How much have the Bombers improved this year, plenty, but have they bridged the gap? The Hawks are still the pace setters, playing excellent football and no obvious weaknesses. Expect an excellent match before a large and lively crowd, no greater pleasure than a neighbourly challenge.
