Peninsula Power Women overcame two Olympic FC Women equalisers to record a see-sawing 3-2 victory at A.J. Kelly Park on Saturday night.

Brieanna Watt’s brace bookended an exciting fair which saw Power seal their sixth win of the season and consign Olympic to consecutive defeats for the first time.

The hosts made the perfect start under new coach Gary Ellis, opening the scoring inside 20 minutes when Watt shot into the top right corner from outside the area.

Watt’s goal was enough to make it 1-0 at the break but the advantage was erased just seven minutes after the restart as Olympic drew level through attacker Allira Toby.

However, Power recaptured the lead in spectacular fashion just a minute later as Brittany Whitfield added to last week’s hattrick by netting a bicycle kick in the 53rd minute.

The score remained 2-1 for over 10 minutes until Olympic fullback Kristi New pulled the visitors level again with an impressive long-range effort.

The home side weren’t to be denied though with Watt heading Power back into the lead at 3-2, which they were able to hold for the remaining 15 minutes to secure a second straight victory.

Speaking after the match, Power coach Gary Ellis was pleased with his players’ implementation of new plans.

“The girls were outstanding. We changed a few things, we fixed a few things, they followed direction and we got the win,” Ellis said.

While complimenting the quality of the hosts’ goals, Olympic coach Phil Canham felt his side could have prevented the opportunities.

“A little bit frustrating from my perspective because we should have stopped them getting to the chances,” Canham said.
