Gators Put Six Past Souths
Words: Matt Dorman
The Gap Women continued to surge into premiership contention with a 6-0 defeat of Souths United Women at Walton Bridge Reserve on Saturday night.
Leah Curtis netted a treble to ensure Gators made it six matches unbeaten, keeping Souths last in the process.
The home side netted the opener after an attacking start as Curtis maintained her scoring record of better than a goal a game in the 13th minute.
Defender Bec Price soon doubled her side’s advantage by heading home from a corner and it was 3-0 as early as the 31st minute thanks to a second from Curtis, finishing from a Ruth Blackburn pass.
Souths managed to survive for the remainder of the half and held the hosts out until after the hour, when Charli McLennan assisted Bethany Ashton in making it 4-0.
A flurry of substitutions followed until, with 10 minutes remaining, Blackburn finished through the goalkeeper’s legs for 5-0.
Curtis completed her hattrick late to round out the 6-0 scoreline.
Speaking after the match, Gators coach Rob Askew complimented his team’s improving consistency.
“We definitely dominated the game. I thought it was a pretty good performance on our behalf,” Askew said.
While pleased with a “great improvement” from the two teams’ last meeting, Souths coach Byron Hellmuth said his team would look to create more goalscoring opportunities.
“We’ll work on playing the ball out and getting it into our attacking third this week,” Hellmuth said.
