An important game looms when Woomelang Lascelles host a determined Ouyen United in round 10 of the Mallee Football League. After 7 games apiece both teams are 4 wins and 3 losses, meaning the winner of this match will go four points clear into second position.
Both teams will be looking to field near full-strength teams sides going into the clash. Brad Vallance is a chance to return and if he becomes available will be a key figure in helping the Demons get over the line. Other players have been able to step up in his absence, however when Vallance and Angwin are playing in the same team, it makes it very hard for the opposition to match up on them both.
Martin Jones and young developing backman, Jack Poulton have been serviceable down back all year for the Cats. Last week they threw Devin McFarlane into the backline, which seemed to pay off. This may be an option again for the Cats if their challengers are at full strength.
Brodie Adcock provides run and precision disposal, setting up many clean forward thrusts through Charles McAdam on the wing. This allows for a fast paced free flowing style of football that is the Cats’ strength.
Ouyen United also like the wide-open spaces. They have many young running players who can be very damaging if they’re able to get space on the outside. Jackson, Tom and Alex Morrish have all been able to make an impact on the scoreboard in recent weeks and the return of Dean Staunton has given them drive from the midfield.
There will be battles across all lines for this game, and a very evenly poised match should result in a close finish.
We have top versus bottom in the second match of the round. However, Walpeup Underbool will have a few inclusions to give them a chance for their first win of the season. Standing in their way will be a formidable Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers team.
Rian Anderson is a barometer for the Roos and after missing last game with a hamstring strain, they will be hoping he can get through four quarters. Kane and Kyle Munro will also add an important depth of experience, while Luke Coates and Thomas Hedley also returning to the side should bring run and carry.
The Tigers will be looking for a solid four-quarter performance after a close match for three quarters against the Demons last week. They are a team who are capable of kicking multiple goals in a short period of time. They have many experienced players who can provide leadership on the field in any circumstance.
The Tigers’ depth is what will really test the Roos. With the likes of Matt Elliot, Joe Summerhayes and Lance Brown all able to play in multiple positions for their team provides flexibility for match ups. They are not afraid to use the bench and when they do they don’t lose anything in terms of quality on the field.
It has been a long season so far for the Roos, and now they will be approaching every week with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. Their first win will only be a matter of time, as they have enough quality players in their team to cause an upset at any team. The question is, can they match it with a team with only one loss for the season on their home turf?
