Danny is in a good mood this week and has plenty of positive news and love around the AFL Sydney circles this week.
Winners are grinners
Manly-Warringah celebrated another dominant win on the weekend against Western Suburbs. Wins at home are great but it was special for another reason as popular clubman, Jack “Screech” Hawkins saluted in his 150th game.
Danny was also informed of a potential bromance developing on the field as Magpies’ Yannick Milligan-Saville was spotted hugging Brayden Fowler after giving him a 1st quarter analysis.
Sweeps out west
It was also a great weekend in particular for Camden and Penrith who both celebrated clean sweeps across all grades. It was particularly noteworthy for Penrith who celebrated the sweep (five out of five) for the first time in the club’s history.
Premier Division also had a weekend where two matches were decided by less than a goal including North Shore’s surprise win against UNSW/ES on Sunday. The win represented a 70 plus point turnaround from their Round 2 loss against the same opposition.
East Coast lend a hand for local juniors
The Eagles aren’t just kicking goals on the field as evidenced in the photo to the left. The Eagles are helping out 80 players from feeder club Kellyville/Rouse Hill who have kicked off a Junior Academy.
Run by David Hemmings with a cast of dozens helping, including Director of Coaching Michael Sankey, Kieran Emery, Jack Dimery, Josh Cutting, Zach Johns, Alexander Van Vliet, Matt Eastman, Lachlan Hand and Chloe Arndt, the ground was packed with kids and parents on a Monday night.
The Academy has certainly started off with a bang and has proved to be a very popular part of a young boy or girl's progress towards being a better footballer.
Hit the floor
It has come to Danny’s attention that over the long weekend, Pennant Hills’ Tim Wales and his girlfriend went away to the Hunter Valley for a bit of a romantic trip. It’s rumoured that on Saturday afternoon whilst riding through a leafy path, Tim's front wheel slipped out and he fell to the floor. A teary Tim had a few scrapes on his elbows and knees, luckily his girlfriend Maddie was there to carry him back to their lodge over her shoulders. Lucky you were wearing your helmet Tim! Otherwise there could have been some real damage to get you upset!
The attached photo was taken only minutes before the fall , featuring a cheery Tim in a shocking helmet he brought from home.
Women on the big stage
It all started with Auburn GIANTS getting the opportunity to play on the big stage at the MCG. This was a day after they defeated Moorebank in a dominant display.
It continues this Saturday when the UTS Shamrocks are set to take on the Manly-Warringah Giants in a curtain raiser for the GWS Giants vs North Melbourne Kangaroos clash at Spotless Stadium. Ball up is at 11.05am.
Get there early to watch the girls in action if you can! A few could well make a feature in our 10 to 1 which concludes next week.
Top Cat up for grabs
It appears to be going swimmingly for Camden who made it six on the trot on the weekend with a tight win over Moorebank. Dig a little deeper and sources believe it is due to a change of leadership. Gun player and former Sanders Medallist, Josiah Ayling has been MIA with a ‘knee injury’.
Relieving captain, Mark Maher has relished the captaincy and is in such a purple vain of form that people are said to be asking whether or not Josiah will still be the Club captain upon return from his 'injury'
Angel continues to harp on
Tommy Angel has been furious as a result of the increased attention on him via the weekly diatribe.. In particular his last appearance made him quite upset, when it was suggested that he is desperate to earn a reputation amongst AFL Sydney pundits. Tommy was quoted in response to this saying, 'It just really annoys me that someone is writing in saying that I want to earn a reputation ! That's just not me.. Anyone that knows me knows that I play for individual accolades and Phelan Votes'.
He was also said by sources to be furious on missing out on representative selection. He was spotted at the representative game taking the stats of particular players he felt he should have been picked ahead of. He is in the process of writing a letter of complaint to AFL Sydney. He reportedly said he cannot believe they did not pick a player who will no doubt go close to winning the Phelan at the end of the year.
Say whaaat!
Finally, there were a few entries in Danny’s Wacky files this week;
We've all had the yips in front of goals on occasions; but the scoreboard at Sydney Uni No 1 on Saturday had the number 8 stuck up on the away team's tens of behinds column - meaning at the end of the Div 4 game, North Shore's score was showing as 3.87:- 80 more behinds would have made a close game; but it did make me wonder about what would be the most inaccurate scores ever.
Also, the game at Henson Park between Sydney University and East Coast (Division One) had to be abandoned at three quarter time when the sprinklers came on and couldn’t be turned off.
North Shore runs a recovery photo competition each week and the nominations of late has seen one of its players nearly get locked in the ice-bag freezer of a Service station, one lad taping Icy-poles to his sore muscles and a common theme to 'warm up' the body in freezing water is to watch adult films.
In surely a first for the AFL Sydney competition, two former Phelan Medallists- Matt Carey and Kieran Wright played on the weekend for Pennant Hills Division One against Macquarie University. In a unique situation, Pennant Hills haven’t played for three weeks (triple whammy of a bye, wet weather round and June long weekend), and Wright didn’t play in the last Premier Division game so as such, he and Carey could line up together under the By-Law where a maximum of two players can drop back a grade.
