THE presence of of former Collingwood and Fremantle star Chris Tarrant hasn’t been enough to inspire Corio to its first win of the season, as the Devils suffered a 39-point loss to Anakie at Shell Oval.
Corio kicked the first two goals of the game, however the Roos slammed home 10 of the next 12 to take a 36-point lead into quarter time.
The Devils outscored the visitors four goals to two over the next two quarters, before Anakie pulled away to record its third win of the season, 18.13 (121) to 12.10 (82).
Jamie Phillis and Gary Richert both kicked four goals for the Roos, who were best served by Luke Wilson and Shane McMurrich.
Dylan Shelley was best up forward for Corio with four goals, with David Holzfeind again their best.
Werribee Centrals sent a subtle reminder to the rest of the competition that they are not a spent force after withstanding a furious fightback from Belmont Lions to claim an 11-point at Winter Reserve.
The accurate Centurions appeared headed for a comfortable victory when they took a 46-point lead into the main break.
However, the Lions came storming back into the contest with a 8.1 to 2.0 third quarter.
The home team threatened to steal the match in the final quarter, but Peter Mark’s men held firm for a 20.3 (123) to 16.16 (112) result.
Assistant coach Jason Butty starred with goals, while captain Tyren Montebruno showed his undoubted talent with seven majors.
Josh Blair (five goals) and Eugene Stanciu (four) were against amongst the goals, with Xavier Lourey impressive for the Lions.
Thomson has replaced Belmont Lions in the top five after a 74-point win over Geelong West at Godfrey Street, 17.17 (119) to 6.9 (45).
The Tigers were made to work hard by the Cheetahs during the first half, leading by just 16 points at the main break.
However, it was all one way after half time as Thomson piled on 10.7 to 1.3.
Captain Jackson Macleod finished with six goals to take his tally to the season to 36, while Jayden Durran chimed in with three.
Kevin Thomson kicked three goals for Geelong West, who named Tyrone Paatsch as their best.
Tom Mullane-Grant has jumped clear at the top of the GDFL goalkicking after kicking 12 majors as Bannockburn handed East Geelong a 124-point hiding, and set-up a mouth-watering clash with neighbors Inverleigh next week.
The Tigers opened up a 19-point advantage at quarter time and continued to pull away throughout the afternoon at Richmond Crescent.

Jordan Drew and Casey Meehan both kicked four goals for the unbeaten Hawks, with Will Hamer and Blake Hutchinson impressive all day.
Hayden Wilson kicked two goals for the struggling Blues who meet fellow cellar-dweller Corio next week.
Round 9 concludes on Sunday with the clash between 2014 grand finalists Bell Post Hill and North Geelong
