Woden-Weston FC 0 Tigers FC 5 (Hussain Fureje 17’, Alex Oloriegbe 30’, Julian Borgna 35’, 54’, Goran Josifovski 81’) 
Tigers FC shook off the disappointment of losing in the Westfield FFA Cup Qualifiers Semi-Final in midweek by seeing off Woden-Weston FC with the minimum of fuss, claiming a 5-0 victory at Woden Park under the floodlights on Friday night. The result enabled the Tigers to close the gap on leaders Belconnen United to a single point ahead of the Blue Devils Sunday match with Gungahlin United, the Tigers Westfield FFA Cup conquerors. You could have been forgiven for thinking it was Woden-Weston FC backing up from a tiring cup match only 48 hours later as they started sluggishly and the Tigers, with perhaps a point to prove, ratcheted up the tempo from the outset. They were no doubt helped in their endeavour by some slip-shod Woden-Weston defending with the visitors able to score three times without reply before the break. Hussain Fureje, making his starting debut, was given a simple tap-in midway through the half after the home team had failed to clear their lines sufficiently allowing Alex Oloriegbe the opportunity to provide Fureje with a simple tap-in. It was 2-0 shortly afterwards after panic in the Woden-Weston defence saw a ball ricochet to Oloriegbe who, denied initially by Rory Larkin, was quickest to react to bury from close range. The third was unfortunate for Larkin. Facing a penalty the Woden-Weston FC stopper saved Julian Borgna’s effort but the ball fell nicely for the young forward to bludgeon the rebound in and send the Tigers into the sheds 3-0 to the good. The second half continued in much the same vein with the Tigers attack looking lively and likely to add to their total. Borgna duly obliged with goal number four in almost farcical circumstances. A pass found Oloriegbe in the area and, when he stumbled, everyone stopped apart from Borgna who slammed home. And it was to be five close to full-time. Some excellent interplay from Gaby Wilk’s blossoming side culminated in Goran Josifovski opening his body and slotting a beautiful finish from 25 metres for his third goal of the season and to wrap up a tremendous Tigers display.

Gungahlin United 2 (Stephen Domenici 37’, Danny Krajacic 76’) Belconnen United 2 (Aisosa Ihegie 12’ Goran Mukevski 42’ (pen))
A goal from substitute Danny Krajacic with his first touch of the ball earned Gungahlin United a points in a 2-2 draw with Belconnen United in the dress rehearsal for next weekend’s Westfield FFA Cup Qualifiers Final. Krajacic scored seconds after being summoned off the bench, his first goal of the season a cracking strike, rounding off a lightning fast Gungahlin counter-attack to give the home team a share of the spoils that their second half performance deserved. Belconnen dominated the opening stanza and were unfortunate not to go into the interval with more than a 2-1 advantage after playing some excellent football. The visiting team took the lead in the eleventh minute when striker Aisosa Ihegie put them ahead with his fourth goal of the season. But Gungahlin, who reached the Westfield FFA Cup decider after an inspired midweek demolition of Tigers FC, finally found their groove with Stephen Domenici working the equaliser in the 37th minute. Belconnen hit back straight away and were awarded a penalty three minutes before the half-time whistle. Goran Mukevski, who has been deadly from the spot in recent weeks, cracked home the spot-kick to edge the Blue Devils 2-1 ahead at the break. Gungahlin though were a different proposition after the resumption and, arguably, had much the better of the second stanza. It took them until fourteen minutes from time to find the leveller however as substitute Krajacic struck his first PlayStation 4® National Premier Leagues goal. After that Gungahlin could have won it, creating the better opportunities in the final quarter, but the match ended all square leaving Belconnen top of the table and both parties in buoyant mood ahead of next weekend’s crunch cup tie.

Tuggeranong United 1 (Zac Munster 60’ (pen)) Canberra Olympic 2 (Josh Calabria 15’, Robbie Cattanach 51’)
Canberra Olympic survived a late Tuggeranong  United flurry to emerge with a priceless 2-1 victory at Kambah 2 in an exciting match for the decent sized crowd on a bright Sunday afternoon. The visitors had to do so with only ten players following the dismissal of midfielder Daniel Colbertaldo, the former Tuggeranong crowd favourite ordered off the field after allegedly stamping on the leg of United defender Michael Gurney. By that stage Olympic was 2-0 ahead and looking likely to take the points despite a spirited Tuggeranong performance. The visiting team, chasing the league championship title, took the lead in the fifteenth minute as Josh Calabria rose highest at the back post to meet a free-kick and head into the net from close range. They should have already been ahead by that stage but Pat Ross-Magee somehow contrived to spoon the ball over the bar with an empty net gaping from less than six yards. Olympic weren’t to rue that miss as they went further ahead six minutes into the second half as Robbie Cattanach found space to fire an unerring shot past Rowan Forbes-Shepherd in the Tuggeranong goal for his sixth goal of the season. The dismissal of Colbertaldo swung some momentum back in Tuggeranong’s favour and when Sam Shadbolt was hauled down in the area by Olympic custodian Angelo Konstantinou they had a lifeline. Zac Munster confidently drilled home the penalty to set up a barn storming final. United pushed for the equaliser but, in truth, the ten man Olympic team held firm in relative comfort with only a Tomas Ruiz skewed effort looking like forcing a draw for the unlucky home side.

Monaro Panthers 1 (Matt Menser 50’) Canberra FC 4 (Robbie Deeley 11’, Thomas James 49’ (pen), 85’, Muad Zwed 70’)
Canberra FC made sure that they continued their recent run of good form claiming all three points from their final match before they jet off to the Croatian Tournament in Europe with a commanding 4-1 success over Monaro Panthers. Two goals from former Panthers front man Thomas James helped the visitors to the three points with the English striker taking his season total to ten in the process as he chases the individual Golden Boot award. FC took the lead in the 11th minute when midfielder Robbie Deeley fired home his fourth goal of the season but any thoughts of another comfortable afternoon’s work for Zoran Glavinic and his team were dispelled by a Monaro side that refused to shirk the challenge. Leading only narrowly at the break, FC needed a second goal and it duly arrived four minutes into the second half when James netted his first of the afternoon from the penalty spot. Monaro hit back straightaway to reduce the arrears to 2-1 with a first of the season from Matt Menser but the dismissal of Michael Mensah left the home team with a mountain to climb. That peak became harder when Muad Zwed bagged his first PlayStation 4® National premier Leagues goal for Canberra FC in the seventieth minute and it was nigh on insurmountable by the time that James struck his second of the afternoon with five minutes remaining, seeing out the 4-1 success and leaving Canberra FC nicely placed on the coat tails of Belconnen United.
