It was a heart-stopping day in the Peter Jackson VFL on Saturday, with three of the four matches played coming down to the wire.
Geelong, Sandringham and Casey all claimed victories that were in the balance in the final minutes of play, while Essendon made sure it never got to that stage by producing a first-quarter onslaught against Frankston.
We take a look at all the Round 9 Saturday games:
ESSENDON d FRANKSTON
Margin: 94 points
Telling facts: Essendon set up its fourth consecutive victory against the winless Frankston with a seven-goal-to-nil opening term at Windy Hill. The Bombers were well served by their big men up forward and the resulting percentage boost will keep them entrenched in the top four for another week.
Leading goal kickers: McKernan 5, Bellchambers 4 (Essendon) / Newman, Gardiner, Cass 2 (Frankston)
GEELONG d NORTH BALLARAT
Margin: 9 points
Telling facts: Two teams desperate for their third win of the season played out a classic at Simonds Stadium, with the Cats putting their noses in front with just minutes to play after trailing for much of the match. Geelong’s Sam Blease nailed the late set shot goal to put his team ahead and break North Ballarat hearts.
Leading goal kickers: Close 3, Maas 2 (Geelong) / Hooper 3, Black 2 (North Ballarat)
CASEY SCORPIONS d COBURG
Margin: 8 points
Telling facts: Casey stayed in touch with the top four by recording their fifth win of the season in thrilling circumstances at Casey Fields. Coburg threw everything at the Scorpions in the third term to turn a 16-point half-time deficit into a one-point lead at the last change, but the home side steadied under pressure in the final stanza.
Leading goal kickers: King 5 (Casey) / Featherstone 3 (Coburg)
SANDRINGHAM d PORT MELBOURNE
Margin: 7 points
Telling facts: The Zebras and the Borough played out one for the ages at North Port Oval. There was never more than a couple of goals in it during a high-quality see-sawing battle for most of the day, until Eli Templeton’s second goal in the dying stages sealed Sandringham’s memorable sixth triumph of the season.
Leading goal kickers: McCartin, Saad 3 (Sandringham) / O’Sullivan 4 (Port Melbourne)
