AFL Canberra have once again retained the NSW/ACT Shield by defeating AFL Sydney by 38 points at Blacktown ISP last Saturday.
After trailing at the first break, AFL Canberra dominated the rest of the game and came away with a 10.3.63 to 3.7.25 win.
After AFL Sydney won the first match of the series, the winners of this match would be crowned winners and nobody took a backward step in the first quarter. After a tight tussle, Sydney took a 7 point lead into quarter time.
Canberra lifted their intensity in the second quarter, getting to the ball first and having some good transition of play. Ella Ross was playing well across half back, shutting down any Sydney forward thrusts. A three goal to zero quarter to Canberra saw them take a 11 point lead into the main break.
Canberra continued their momentum after the break running over the top of Sydney and being more precise with ball in hand. A four goal quarter to Canberra and once again keeping Sydney goalless opening up a commanding 35 point lead.
The last quarter was fairly quiet with Sydney unable to make a charge at Canberra and the siren would eventually sound with Canberra celebrating their win.
Karina Demant was outstanding all day and was awarded the best on ground medal. She was well supported by Ella Ross and Bridget Beatson. For the Sydney girls, Tess Mutton battled hard in the ruck all day with fellow midfielders Nikki Perrett and Amy Kowski pushing hard.
