Name:
Brent Colbert
Club:
Seymour Football Club
Role at Club:
Head Senior coach and player
How many years have you been involved in the league/club and in what capacity?
10th year as a player and 2nd year as a playing coach.
Why do you do what you do (president, board member, coach, volunteer)?
Coaching was something I always wanted to be involved in. I have been lucky to have played under some great coaches such as Steve Daniel and Bernie Haberman and the football knowledge I was able to learn from them has been invaluable. I really enjoy been around the playing group and making players better footballers and individuals, this is what attracted me to coaching.
What do you do when you are not volunteering/coaching?
Work at Coca Cola as an account manager
What has been your most rewarding experience in the role you currently have?
My first year of coaching we only won four games so there weren't too many positives to come out of last year. I remember Glen Cole first said to me when I started coaching that it's not coaching the best players that will give you satisfaction but turning an average player into a good player or a good player into a very good player. I have taken this onboard and I will try to make as many players better footballers as I can.
Do you have a funny story or enjoyable moments from your experiences in any of your roles?
Whenever Hugh Robertson asks a footy question or Saady gives me an excuse on why he couldn't get to training always gets the boys laughing. Winning premierships in 2006 and 07 have been my biggest achievements and the life long friendships I have made in my 10 years at Seymour is something that I will always be greatful for.
What advice would you give someone who is on the fence about volunteering/coaching?
Becoming a part of a football club in whatever capacity is a great experience. it's the frienspships you make and the enjoyment you get out of been part of a country football environment is awesome. The fun times definately outweigh the bad times. The players from Seymour and I'm sure from all the other GV clubs really appreciate all the hours and hard work the volunteers, coaches, committee etc put in. It's what makes Everyone come back year after year.
Who is the best player to have ever played in the GVFL?
Saad Saad
What are you looking forward to in 2015?
2015 I want to take this group to another level. We have worked very hard over the pre season on our fitness and structures and I can't wait to see the group reap the rewards if they continue with the commitment they showed over pre season.
Which player do you think crowds will enjoy watching in season 2015 and why?
Tim Bongetti, is the ultimate competitor, plays with plenty of fair and is set for a big year. The players love him and won't take long for the supports to get around him.
Who will play off in the Grand Final in season 2015?
It would be great if Seymour could make it to the last Saturday in September. Benalla, Rochester and Euroa will feature deep into September.
If you could pick any player from within the league to be in your team who would it be and why?
Tim Looby, rarely plays a bad game. Can play in attack or defence and always has an influence on the game wherever he plays.
