Coburg and the Northern Blues will face off this weekend in a showpiece Peter Jackson VFL match at Piranha Park on the Queen’s Birthday Monday public holiday.
Both teams are in the midst of three-game losing streaks, sitting in the bottom four on the ladder and will be desperate to reinvigorate their seasons.
Coburg General Manager Craig Lees said the club believed it was a great opportunity to promote VFL football again on the Queen’s Birthday.
“It’s the first competition game since 2009, so we were happy to take the risk to see if we can generate a crowd on the public holiday,” Lees said.
“When I saw the Northern Blues and Carlton had a bye the following week, I approached Garry (O’Sullivan) and asked whether it will be something the Blues would be happy to consider and possibly alternate every year.
“As a standalone football club, we are always looking for ideas and initiatives to help continue to grow our club in the newly formed standalone era.”
The 151st battle of Bell St will commence at 2pm.
