The current AFL Queensland female high performance manager has earmarked under-18 All Australian Elisha King as a potential “shining light” in a competition that is awaiting the go-ahead.
Starcevich heaped praise on 16-year-old King and Queensland women’s squad members Luana Healey, 18, and Selina Goodman, 24, saying that their talents were proof that a national competition was necessary and would flourish.
“As soon as (AFL boss) Gillon McLachlan pushes the button it will take off and maybe even go above a few other sports in the country,” he said. “They are already growing the profile of the main players in Melbourne and Gill is pushing for a 2017 launch.”
Starcevich is familiar with the Cairns trio from his time coaching Queensland teams and his former role as the AFL’s North Queensland development manager.
“Elisha is in the right age bracket to feature when the national competition begins,” he said.
“Luana is really talented with elite skills and Selina played well in the Queensland selection trial.”
The Queensland squad, which includes Healey and Goodman, will be trimmed before this weekend’s game against Tasmania in Brisbane.
