FEET FIRMLY ON THE JOB AT HAND
James Cousins is a young man on a mission.
He has his first feet firmly on the ground, concentrating on making his next game better than his last.
The 17-year-old is the round seven rising star nomination for the Goulburn Valley League.
He joins a litter of promising youngsters to have already got a nomination.
Cousins, is like every other footballer who gets their start in the sport, starting through Auskick.
He progressed through the junior ranks before landing at the Eagles where he played five thirds’ game in 2013 after returning home from a family holiday.
Last season he played every game in the under 18s, except from the final round where he debuted in the Eagles’ win against Euroa while supporters gathered to remember the 2004 premiership team.
"That was a really great experience for me. There were a lot of people watching and it was great to be part of the club’s second win of the year," he said.
Cousins is a listed player of TAC Cup club the Murray Bushrangers and he is eager to play as many games with them as possible despite still having a further 12 months to play at that level.
He says the prospect of playing against the Northern Territory, Tasmania and New South Wales really excites him, along with all the other TAC Cup rivals.
"It is such a big list that we have and there are still players that the coaches haven’t see yet, so I really want to try and keep my spot," he said.
"The coaches have been fantastic in terms of helping me improve my game."
He rates his father Ken and last year’s coach Andrew Nunn as the biggest influences on his career, while reigning Morrison Medallist Will Martiniello as his toughest opponent.
