1. Brayden Fowler is back in form
It’s hard to keep good players down for long and after a slow start to the season, Brayden Fowler is showing that he is still the most dominant forward in the competition. Fowler has moved to the top of the goal kicking table after kicking 12 goals in the last two weeks and has also been named in the BLK AFL Sydney Team of the Week the last two weeks.
2. The Eagles just keep getting better!
Its difficult to believe that East Coast can keep getting better each week but they appear to be doing just that. Another 100+ point victory highlights how strong they have been and its hard to see when they will lose their next game. They have added former WAFL speedster Blake Anderson to an already strong side which was highlighted last week when they had 10 players selected for the representative squad.
3. Final chances looking slim for Western Suburbs
After losing a tight encounter to UTS last weekend, the Magpies chances of making finals in 2015 are looking very slim. They have now started the season 0 and 5 (and a bye) and will need to start finding a way to win fast. Over the last five years, no team has started the season with 5 straight losses and gone on to make finals. Can Wests defy history and make a late charge?
4. Are Sydney University a genuine premiership threat?
That is the question being asked around the league after splitting the points with premiership contender Pennant Hills on the weekend. Many will argue that the Students have had an easy start to the year but they have flown under the radar having only lost the one match so far. With their NEAFL side playing well and winning games, Sydney Uni’s Premier Division side have a chance to keep a settled side and if they can avoid injuries, they might just challenge the main contenders. The next two rounds will be critical with the Students playing both Manly Warringah and red hot premiership favourites East Coast in consecutive rounds.
5. Strongest AFL Sydney Representative squad in recent history?
The AFL Sydney Representative squad has always been filled with plenty of class players, but 2015 looks to be one of the strongest squads picked in the recent years. The squad contains plenty of former state league and AFL listed players however with the recent NEAFL structure changes, the AFL Canberra side look significantly stronger than last year. The rep fixture over the June long weekend looks an interesting match up and the squad will know that they will need to play well if they want to successfully defend the Carter-Jesaulenko shield.
