Gary Ward will lead Moreton Bay United’s PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland Senior Women’s side after being announced as the replacement for Lorna Dent, who stepped down from the role last week.
Ward took to the dugout for the first time on Sunday and endured a tough initiation as Jets were beaten 7-1 by UQFC Women, although he did have cause for some celebration as Rylee Lemke broke the side’s scoring drought.
The New Zealander steps up to the top job from his position as Jets’ PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland U13 Girls coach, having previously held roles with New Zealand Football’s National Talent Centre and as development officer with Mainland Football.
“I have a strong (football) philosophy and everyone starts with a clean slate,” Ward said upon his appointment.
“My aims are to try and build from here, build on the strong team ethic.”
Sunday’s defeat extended Jets’ winless run to nine matches as they sit only above Souths United Women on the ladder.
Ward acknowledged the work required to turn around the team’s fortunes.
“We have to be realistic. The team has had a rocky start, but we have to work hard, set goals, be cohesive and have a strong team culture,” he said.
Aiding that task will be new additions Jamee Woolf, who debuted on the weekend, and attacking midfielder Kymberley Steyger.
Woolf, a forward, joins Jets after two months with second-placed Eastern Suburbs Women, while fellow 18-year-old Steyger arrives from Brisbane Women’s Premier League side Capalaba.
