PLAYSTATION 4 VICTORY LEAGUE TEAM OF THE WEEK - ROUND 6

This week's Playstation 4 Victory League Team of the Week is in 1-4-4-2 formation.

Devonport City had the win of the week, downing the highly favoured Hobart Jeep Zebras 2-0 at the 'Portress', Valley Road. As a result, there are three Strikers in the TOTW from their second big home win in as many outings.

Northern Rangers also have three chargers in the all-star 11, with the northerners getting the monkey off their back on the weekend with the first win of the 2015 season.

Olympia FC Warriors midfield brigade continues to dominate contests and two of their big guns feature this week, while two South Hobart stars get their second nod in as many weeks out of a fiery 3-2 epic at Darcy Street.

There are always those players that just miss the cut for the Team of the Week and this week was no exception, with a host of names that were unlucky not to find a place on the Team of the Week. Some of these included: Launceston City's goalscorer and real aggressor in a fighting 4-1 loss, Aaron Campbell. The South Hobart v Kingborough Lions game was a sensational attacking clash with plenty of standout performers, for Kingborough, Jack Turner was the best player on the pitch before being shown red which obviously sees him miss the cut, while Lions goalkeeper Andrew Duncan had a solid game guarding goal, pulling off some top draw efforts but he just is beaten to the crunch. South Hobart had Kobe Kemp who hit a screamer and did a power of work in midfield, Brayden Mann, whose second half was a large reason why South collected maximum points and super substitute Hugh Undy, who buzzed about and scored the equaliser for the Champions after coming off the bench.

Well, who did make the cut and why?

TOTW R6

GOALKEEPER

Tom Pearce (Devonport City Strikers)

The youngster gets his second nod in the Playstation 4 Victory League Team of the Week for 2015, for an outstanding clean sheet performance up against the then top of the table Hobart JEEP Zebras.

He was excellent in the Devonport goal on Saturday, making several crucial saves in the second half to keep the Zebras at bay. The youngster is growing in confidence by the week and he distributed the ball effectively by both hand and foot.

DEFENCE

Dominic Smith (Devonport City Strikers)

Dom 'Dommy Long Legs' Smith was another youngster who sparkled in a big result for Devonport, the left back dominated all his opponents in a stern defensive display by 'port. He showed excellent composure and his passing accuracy was high, a real up-and-coming talent for the north-west powerhouse.

Aidan Rigby (Northern Rangers)

Rigby has previously been a linchpin in the Rangers midfield but in 2015, he looks home in defence and he played a big part in the club's first win for 2015. Rigby's composure, decision making and sound use out of defence was a joy to watch.

Nick Cuthbertson (Kingborough Lions)

Despite copping three goals, Kingborough’s defence was excellent and for the most part impregnable, Cuthberston led from the front all day and made it hard work for South, he read the play well to cut out passes and made some crucial timely challenges to deny South efforts on goal, particularly in a sublime first half from the Lions.

Liam Quaile (South Hobart)

The Quaile Storm follows in the footsteps of Connor Schmidt in making it two team of the week appearances in a row. Quaile, like Schmidt came through the NTC pathway and has taken to the Victory League like a duck to water.

Quaile’s gritty performance at full back was excellent in what was an enthralling contest at Darcy Street. He showed courage and determination usually expected from players above his years. The former Ulverstone youngster was in the wars on Sunday but that was because of his uncompromising nature at full back, despite coming up against some big frames, he didn’t shirk a challenge and battled hard up against a big body in Danny Cowen. He created well and linked with Hunt down the flank to great effect.

MIDFIELD

Yitay Towns (Northern Rangers)

Yitay

Towns is this week's Mitsubishi Motors Player of the Week!

The Rangers young gun took out the public vote by over 50 votes, with the hat-trick hero deemed by the public as Round 6's standout performer.

Towns is a player coming of age in the Victory League in 2015, some of his performances have been definitive in the on-field fortunes of his Rangers side. He was industrious through midfield with terrific commitment in winning the ball, holding up play and finding the unmarked player to pick out a pass to. Towns also struck three decisive goals, including a terrific acrobatic header to open the scoring.

Daniel Syson (Devonport City Strikers)

English import Daniel Syson put in a massive shift on Saturday in the middle of the park for the Devonport Strikers. Syson's passing was a class above any other player on the pitch, his pin point pass found Brody Denehey at the back post for the Strikers’ opening goal to top off an all-round standout performance.

Shae Hickey (Olympia FC Warriors)

Hickey has been one of the pickups of the season, put in a trademark performance with gut running, hounding and hunting the ball across the park as well as playing it around well to set things up and create for the Warriors in the front third.

Nick Mearns (Olympia FC Warriors)

Nick Mearns leads the Walter Pless Media Award and has been the standout player of the opening six rounds of the 2015 season. On Saturday, Mearns again pulled strings and terrorised an opposing side, he was in amongst all the action across the 90 minutes and was key in orchestrating chances on goals.

FORWARDS

Adam Edwards (Northern Rangers)

The Englishman showed off some nimble dribbling skills, speedy pace down the wings and super-awareness in the box to find his teammates with some slick passing. He also struck a superb goal from an angle on the left that rocketed into the net.

Chris Hunt (South Hobart)

The Wing Commander has hit some hot form. Hunt ran hard from the opening minute to the closing minute, seemed to be at the centre of everything positive for South in the opening half and continued to battle hard into the second half to create chances for the hosts.

Could have had a goal or two if his finishing was on but he was overall outstanding and a lot of his gut running and thankless runs often paved the way for others to have chances on goal.
