Brisbane Strikers have welcomed the challenge of undefeated Moreton Bay United in the Westfield FFA Cup Brisbane Zone Qualifying Round 6.
The fixture is arguably the most high-profile of four matches drawn yesterday at the Football Brisbane offices - pitting two of Queensland’s in-form second-tier clubs against each other.
Strikers and Jets drew 1-1 at Perry Park earlier this season and both teams have at various times sat top of the PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland table this season.
Despite conceding it will be a tough assignment, Striker captain Michael Angus said advancing past Jets will prove Strikers cup credentials as the club seeks a second straight appearance in the national Round of 32.
“What a great scene to go and show what we’ve got and the way we can perform, and progress in the competition,” Angus said.
“There’s always going to be the critics and different people saying we could have had an easier draw, but I think that with the challenge of having good opposition it feels that much sweeter when you do proceed and go through.”
“This is no disrespect to the other teams, but if there’s a team where there’s less pressure, or hype about the situation then you’re expected to progress. Whereas a game like this, it’s all there for a fantastic setting for when we play – and we are at home as well, which is even more delightful.”
Veteran defender Greig Henslee also stressed the importance of home ground advantage in the do-or-die cup atmosphere which served Strikers well in their previous Westfield FFA Cup outing against fellow PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland club Brisbane City in April.
“I think the most important thing for us is that we have them at Perry Park. We’re confident in playing anyone at Perry Park and I suppose Moreton Bay will be no different”.
“Certainly with Olympic being out now it has opened things up a little bit and it’s a tough one. Moreton Bay are flying high and they are the team to beat in Queensland at the moment.”
“They are unbeaten and it’s going to be a tough game,” Henslee concluded.
A date for the match is expected to be officially confirmed next week.
