1. Wet weather and grounds in Sydney just don’t mix
After the terrible weather early in the week last week, all but six games were called off due to wet weather. A decision at AFL HQ was made to cancel all grades apart from Premier Division and Women’s Division One due to multiple ground closures across the city ahead of ANZAC Day. Where have the days gone where grounds would be opened rain, hail or shine??
2. Trent Stubbs a Phelan Medal “smokey”?
The Eagles showed how dominant they can be when they defeated UTS by 126 points last Sunday. One player who featured heavily in the game was ex-Collingwood listed player Trent Stubbs. A NEAFL representative player in 2014, Stubbs showed plenty of class kicking five goals on both his left and right foot whilst playing in the midfield. Currently leading the race for the Stan Milton trophy, he could well be in the lead for the Phelan Medal as well.
3. Bye couldn’t come quick enough for Wests
After three losses to start the year including two 50+ point defeats, the bye has come around at the right time for Western Suburbs. Coach Kevin Eynaud has had an influx of new players and will need to regroup his players and get them working to the game plan because if they don’t, they could find themselves out of the finals race very quickly.
4. Where’s Fowlers goal kicking gone?
Last years Stan Milton goal kicking winner, Brayden Fowler, was one of the most dominant forwards on the ground last weekend in Manly’s big win against UNSW/ES. Fowler was a beast in the air marking almost everything that came his way and early on looked like he could kick a big bag. There was one problem....GOALKICKING. Fowler had multiple shots at goal last week and he nearly demonstrated every type of miskick from floaters to helicopters. If he can fix this kicking up at training, a big bag of goals is just around the corner.
5. Skills missing at Uni No.1 Oval
Not all games can have silky skills on display, and that was the case with the Sydney University and North Shore. It was an error riddled game with both sides missing targets causing turnovers and a lot of fumbles with ball in hand. Wet weather during the week certainly played its part in the skills being off but if both sides want to compete with the top sides, their skills will need to improve or they could face a few big defeats in coming weeks.
