Sharks Women Back To Best

Palm Beach SC

Words: Matt Dorman

Palm Beach SC Women returned to winning ways in style with a largely untroubled 6-0 win over Souths United Women at Wakerley Park on Sunday.

Souths were competitive throughout the first 45 minutes but couldn’t stay with Sharks, who confidently shook off last week’s first loss.

Few chances had been created until Ambrosia Malone was left free to tap-in a cross at the far post for a 20th minute opener.

Malone next struck a shot against the post and just as looked like Souths would survive further damage to the break, Sharks striker Lauren Brown capitalised on a defensive error to finish into the bottom corner for a 2-0 lead seconds before half time.

The home side side remained in the contest for a further 15 minutes before the Gold Coast club kicked away from their tiring opposition in the final half hour.

Deanna Thompson finished well to make it 3-0 in the 65th minute, before Kiri Dale’s back-post volley from a corner and Brown’s second of the game quickly blew the margin out to 5-0.

The scoring was rounded out in stoppage time when Thompson followed up on an initially blocked shot to complete her own brace.

Speaking after the match, Souths coach Byron Hellmuth remained pleased despite shipping six goals.

“The performance was great, we followed a lot of directions and played to our plan so I’m hoping tonight was the turnaround,” Hellmuth said.

Sharks coach Gary French praised his team’s composure when faced with a potential banana skin.

“Souths made it very difficult, they worked really hard, they got players behind the ball, but I thought overall we controlled the game,” French said.
