Danny has been suitably impressed over the last week with how the AFL Sydney community has managed to make international headlines.
This week we head straight to the Bat Files which continues to grow in profile and popularity. Hey even the PM is impressed!
The Bat Files
Top of the Files this week is undoubtedly, the Bats interaction with Tony Abbott. Abbott was at the Bats’ new major sponsor, The Oaks Hotel, when he accepted the Bats invitation to participate in the club’s Presentation ceremony. He then proceeded to skol a beer in six seconds flat much to the amazement of those at the venue, Bats included. Read more about it here. The story had over 10K reach on our Facebook page and reached many more with the story going viral on radio, newspaper, internet, TV and social media channels. The Bats have even gone so far to write an open letter inviting Mr and Mrs Abbott to the upcoming Ladies Day.
The Files also hears Michael May has recently had a talking to by coach Nic Fosdike regarding the copious amounts of women around the Eastern Suburbs he's befriended on Facebook. Coach has been worried that May has been concentrating too much on the 'people you may know' section rather than basic team setups and structures.
In other news:
- Thomas Zilm of the UTS Bats housemate let out his latest play for getting the hard ball gets off the field is a candlelit bedroom and a recent subscription to Netflix.
- Jackson Cosgrove is again in the lime light with his girlfriend of now two weeks confiscating his phone for the weekend after a Snapchat was sent to all his 'bae's' with his shirt off (see picture left). Danny hears that Jackson missed training on Monday as he was unaware of where we the Bats were training, with no phone updates.
- Another regular write up, Damon Collina, missed Saturday nights awards night, now named 'The Tonys', for "A quiet night in". It has since been revealed that he attended Bondi's 'event cinemas' to see 'Cinderella' with new partner, Jodie. Tough man on the field, softy off.
- New recruit/ team of the week maker on debut/ Bats poster boy, Tom Larby, has requested his teammates now call him 'Luxury', after turning up to training the past week in TWO different Rolls-Royce cars. Larbs is an engineer at RR but insists he earned these auto-mobiles as payment for hard work. Well done, Luxury
- Injured superstar and 2014 UTS leading goal scorer, Adam Baker, has earned himself a club fine after turning up to training last Wednesday with a spray tan, given by his partner. Need we say more?
- The UTS star half-back flank, Hayden 'Fossil' Anderson has been spotted in his bootleg jeans and his New Balance sneakers whilst also purchasing Ralph Lauren polos. Fosdike is worried he is beginning to show signs of ageing especially with a few grey hairs beginning to appear on his back.
- In an attempt to ride the Tony Abbott media wave, Michael May actually asked if he could go to an interview. His wish was of course rejected when it became known that he had left the Royal Oak prior to the famous skol to, as inspired by 'Good Will Hunting', "see about a girl."
Dragons breathe fire on special occasion
Often the four points is enough motivation to get a win, but St George had two extra reasons in their first home game of the season. Over the off season, the club sadly lost Bob Sterling but made a fitting salute to the legend he was by naming the change rooms after him. It was a day for legends as Steve Wilsen celebrated his 200th game in style with a narrow win over Sydney University in Premier Division.
Young talent time
While on the subject of St George, maybe it was a sign of the future with debutant, Eli Prescott earning best on ground honours. Prescott hailed from the Macleay Valley on the Mid North Coast and is a talented athlete with the Swans Academy. He wasn’t the only debutant to impress with young Jordan Lampi (originally from Victoria) in his first game of Premier Division kicking five goals. In a competition where veterans and mid-20 year old players have dominated in recent seasons, is Premier Division undergoing a changing of the guard?
No ex-Skuse’s this week
Mark Skuse (East Coast Eagles) earned the honour last week of being the first Division One player to be named in the Team of the Week. Usually the domain of Premier Division players, it was admittedly a mistake on the part of an unnamed AFL Sydney staffer who is rumoured to have a man crush on Skuse. The TOW nomination had been credited with Skuse’s promotion to Premier Division on the weekend, where he kicked a goal in the Eagles big win over Western Suburbs.
Ross down back?
A source close to boon Western Suburbs recruit, Jake Ross told Danny the ex-pat Victorian rumoured to be on a four figure pay packet a game is supposedly under pressure to perform with GWS and Sydney chasing his signature after Paul Bevan has given him the ultimatum that a relegation to the back pocket is a real possibility after his patchy start to the year.
Send me an Angel- part two
Tom Angel was spotted signing a contract on a napkin at the Steyne Hotel and is seeking a transfer over to join his good mates at Manly-Warringah (says the Manly-Warringah source). The conditions being he gets a membership at the elite local personal training studio, Body language and he gets full rights to pick up the P-Man (Jared Pocott) every time he does a 'walk of game' early on a Sunday morning. His younger brother Harry is also seeking a transfer but Manly-Warringah is said to be not interested “at all”.
Gus over his head
One of the highly amusing events at the Pennant Hills-Manly game at Weldon Oval on Saturday concerned a very animated Pennant Hills Club stalwart Angus “Gus” McKernan rocking back in his plastic viewing chair at a particularly exciting moment in the third quarter as his beloved Demons were mounting their charge at the premiers, causing the chair to flip back and submit the mature aged Gus to a particularly athletic but undignified reverse somersault on to the grass behind him. For once in his life Gus was stuck for words as he tried to determine how he came through the manoeuvre unscathed.
Penno topped off the event by storming home for a great win over the 2013 and 2014 premiers with a team consisting of 11 changes (primarily youngsters) to the 2014 Grand Final team. Something to warm Gus’s heart as he headed off home to a nice warm bath to recover from the day’s events.
In tribute of Gus, Danny has adorned for one-week only “A Result to Fall Off Your Chair Over”. Could UTS, after a week off, continue their unbeaten streak and upset premiership fancies East Coast Eagles at Kanebridge Oval? UTS haven’t made the finals since admission into the Premier Division competition, but a win could set them well on their way.
Carey Curse cooked
Gus wasn’t the only person glad to finally get a win over Manly-Warringah. It is a story that has been doing the rounds since the 2013 Grand Final where Pennant Hills veteran Matt Carey made a few comments late in the game which the Giants boys haven’t let him forget. Since then, Manly-Warringah had won 5 consecutive matches until last Saturday, where they Demons snuck home by 7 points. To his credit, Carey played a big part in breaking the ‘curse’ as he was superb on the day, kicking three goals to be amongst the best on the ground.
No lady luck in Draft
Finally, Danny was disappointed not to see any AFL Sydney Womens players drafted for the upcoming Melbourne v Western Bulldogs match which has become an annual event. Despite the Womens’ big win over AFL Canberra recently, some of the talent which included Maddy Collier and Steph Walker were overlooked. Two girls from ACT/Southern NSW were picked up but there will be opportunities aplenty as the female program continues to grow in the state.
